23-year-old Chinese woman dies after being electrocuted by iPhone 5, Apple to investigate incident

iphone5

A 23-year-old Chinese woman who was weeks away from her wedding, died last week. The alleged cause? She was electrocuted by her iPhone 5.

Chinese news agency Xinhua reports that police have confirmed the accident and the woman?s death. It?s also being reported that the woman,?Ma Ailun, was electrocuted by her iPhone when she answered it while it was charging. Her sister posted what happened on?Sina Weibo, a Chinese microblogging site similar to Twitter. The message was reposted more than 3,000 times and gained a significant amount of attention in Chinese media.

As we all know, answering your phone while it?s connected to the charger is perfectly normal and safe. It should definitely not result into something like death. According to?Fortune, other family members chimed in on Weibo saying that she had just stepped out from a bath. But authorities say??they could not identify the source of the current that killed her.?

It appears that it might be too early to tell exactly what happened to the woman, despite all the claims being made.

Apple has acknowledged the incident and provided a statement regarding the incident:

?We are deeply saddened to learn of this tragic incident and offer our condolences to the Ma family. We will fully investigate and cooperate with authorities in this matter.?

This is the second phone-related accident to occur recently, as it comes just a few days after a Samsung Galaxy S III exploded and burned a girl?s leg.

Israel Says Poland's New Ban Is "Totally Unacceptable"

JERUSALEM, July 15 (Reuters) - Israel criticised on Monday the extension of Poland's ban on kosher meat production, saying it damaged efforts to rehabilitate Jewish life in a country whose large Jewish community was all but wiped out in the Holocaust.
Citing animal cruelty, Warsaw lawmakers on Friday rejected a government-backed bill that would have allowed slaughterhouses to produce meat in accordance with Jewish ritual law. The practice was halted last year by a constitutional court ruling.
Israel's Foreign Ministry said it was disappointed by the parliamentary vote, which it called "totally unacceptable".
"Poland's history is intertwined with the history of the Jewish people. This decision seriously harms the process of restoring Jewish life in Poland," it said in a statement.
"We call on the parliament to reassess its decision and expect the relevant authorities to find the way to prevent a crude blow to the religious tradition of the Jewish people."
The Holocaust almost eliminated Poland's Jewish community, Europe's biggest before World War Two broke out in 1939. Nazi concentration camps including Auschwitz and Treblinka were located on Polish soil.
Some Polish Jewish groups have also said prejudice about their faith played a part in the anti-kosher measures.
Usually, slaughterhouses stun livestock before killing them, while kosher rites demand an animal is killed by slitting its throat while it is alive and bleeding it to death. The halal meat consumed by observant Muslims is killed in a similar way.
The bill's defeat was a setback for Prime Minister Donald Tusk, who has sought to strengthen ties with Israel. (Writing by Dan Williams; Editing by Jeffrey Heller and Alistair Lyon)

Judo Payments Secures $5M For Its Mobile-Focused Card Processing Platform

Screen Shot 2013-07-15 at 12.27.50If there's one thing we know, it's that the mobile payment space is exploding. European players in this space include Monitise, Paddle, ValidSoft and left-of-field startups like Droplet. However despite operating in the UK since July last year it wasn't known how one of the newer arrivals, Judo Payments, was backed. Founder/CEO Dennis Jones says that it launched with an initial $5M seed round. Terms were undisclosed but it's understood the round was led by a New York based private investor which previously backed Euroffice and PaymentSense, both UK startups. The startup has now come out of a year long beta with some 2,500 merchants on its platform who pay on a subscription basis.

2013 NBA Free Agency: Atlanta Hawks Make Correct Decision Going With Jeff Teague Over Brandon Jennings

?

Kevin Liles-USA TODAY Sports

This summer has been nearly disastrous for the Atlanta Hawks. Losing out on Dwight Howard and the likes of other top free agents such as Andre Iguodala and their own Josh Smith has hurt their plans for 2013, but they have managed to salvage one of the more important pieces to their core.

Point guard Jeff Teague had received an offer from the Milwaukee Bucks for four years and $32 million in which the Hawks decided to match. Atlanta had also considered bringing in Bucks point guard Brandon Jennings instead, maybe for a possible sign-and-trade, but wound up retaining Teague.

For the Hawks, this was the best decision. Teague has two important parts of the stat sheet that stand out over Jennings.

First, Teague shoots the ball at a much higher percentage. Though he averaged about three points less than Jennings last season, he shot the ball at at 45.1 percent versus Jennings? 39.9 percent. jennings also shot the ball almost 16 times per game ? too much to be called a true point guard.

Secondly, Teague put up more assists last year than Jennings at 7.2 versus 6.5 which essentially wipes out the small margin in the turnover differential in which Teague averages just a small percentage more.

But, the Hawks need somebody to facilitate at the point guard position. If you cannot get the ball to a guy like Kyle Korver at an efficient rate, you won?t survive on that team. Jennings not only averages less assists, but again, more total shots per game.

In the end, neither point guard is a top guy in the NBA at his position, but Teague was the better choice long-term. Jennings has a reputation about him that seems to demand a lot more of him in respect to proving his worth to teams around the league. Teague has been consistent in what he does and that?s a huge reason why they brought him back.

Eating In Concrete Tubes Is Not As Dystopian As It Sounds

Pretty much anyone who walks into a bar or diner in a group is scanning for a booth. It's just nicer to eat five plates of cheese fries in your own space. And the architects at Australian firm Techne clearly agree because they used concrete pipes to create seating spaces in the redesigned bar at Melbourne's Prahran Hotel. Finally some privacy.

Roebling Inn Owner ? Baseball Bats Behind The Bar Not A Great Idea

The New York Daily News runs a story today about the ?guns of the Stone Age? ? baseball bats ? and their use as peacemakers behind that bar at some of New York?s most popular watering holes. That?s not the case at the Atlantic Avenue?s Roebling Inn. Owner Jason Furlani, a nice guy with imposing presence who has played bad guys and cops in many movies and TV shows, tells the paper:

NYDN: ?The worst thing you could do, ever, is have any type of weapon at the bar,? says Jason Furlani, manager of Brooklyn Heights? Roebling Inn. ?If one of my bartenders is a 5-foot-4 woman and some guy takes it from her, I?ve just given someone a weapon. The best defense for a bartender to have is the bar itself. It?s a barrier.?

Furlani is currently shooting his movie Floating Sunflowers which he describes here:

Ranking the 10 Scariest Coaches in College Basketball

Many know Sean Woods for making a huge shot to give Kentucky a one-point lead in overtime in the NCAA East Regional Final against Duke in 1992 (you know, the one that ended with that infamous Christian Laettner shot).

Now, Woods is the head coach at Morehead State and he?s already established quite a reputation for some of his in-game antics.

Woods was suspended for one game last season after shoving a player in a game against Kentucky. He?s also been known to be verbally aggressive during games, often yelling at his players.

Woods is a young coach who?s still learning, but he currently has one of the scarier approaches in the game.

Rail at center of Quebec town tragedy and heart of its recovery

By Phil Wahba and Julie Gordon

LAC-MEGANTIC, Quebec (Reuters) - It was a runaway train that caused this month's deadly inferno in Lac-Megantic, but the Canadian town's leaders, business owners and many of its residents see the railway as crucial to their survival and want it operating again as soon as possible.

Fifty people, including 15 still missing, are believed to have been killed on July 6 when a driverless train with 72 oil tanker cars crashed and exploded in the center of the picturesque, lakeside town in rural Quebec.

The derailment was the worst railway disaster in North America in 24 years, and cut off Lac-Megantic's companies from the railroad that ships their products to customers, including exports to Maine, just 18 miles away.

While many of the town's 6,000 residents are incensed that trains carrying such flammable cargo could pass through an area with bars, restaurants and other local businesses, they also say the rail is their economic lifeline.

"We don't want to lose the train. We want our economy to function," said Raymond Lafontaine, the owner of an excavation and pavement company that has 175 workers, making it one of the town's largest employers.

Lafontaine lost a son, two daughters-in-law and an employee in the disaster. He said no money is coming in and he is worried about how long he can hang on without the ability to pay his employees. His 46-year-old company, which makes most of its revenue in Lac-Megantic, had just begun work on a major repavement project downtown.

The derailment is widely expected to spur changes in Canadian railway regulations, and has fueled the debate about the safety of using railroads to transport oil.

Lac-Megantic Mayor Colette Roy-Laroche said she will ask the federal government to draw up a new route that skirts the town center when the rail line is rebuilt.

Lac-Megantic is located in the less prosperous part of Quebec's Eastern Townships, a region with a 6.4 percent unemployment rate, lower than the provincial average.

The town's namesake lake, a deep blue expanse of water that is close to two provincial parks, and nearby mountains covered with dark pine and birch trees, attract hundreds of thousands of visitors a year. Very little oil made it into the lake.

Still, Lac-Megantic is primarily an industrial town, with an industrial park east of its downtown. Even before the crash, many houses and businesses had been put up for sale or for rent on Rue Laval, the town's main artery. Locals said jobs can be hard to find.

RAIL SPUR

The disaster site is still an active crime scene investigation that is likely to be closed for weeks.

Investigators wearing masks could only work 15-minute shifts before having to take a break on Sunday, as the temperature reached 30 degrees Celsius (86 degrees Fahrenheit), police said.

Roy-Laroche, who invited people to visit the town and nearby tourist sites in the wake of the disaster, said on Sunday that visitors should know that a large wall had been erected around the site to prevent anybody from watching the investigation.

"Thank you for being here, thank you for coming to support us, but I don't want to cause too much disappointment. You can't see what's going on," she said in a briefing.

Lac-Megantic's mayor and business leaders said they want to build a temporary track to connect to parts of the railway outside the restricted investigation area. The timing is uncertain.

"We have no sense whatsoever of when we'll be able to examine any possible solution," Roy-Laroche told Reuters. "The rail is essential to our industries."

The railway also is key for Tafisa's particle board manufacturing plant in Lac-Megantic's industrial park, which makes cabinetry products from wood fiber that would otherwise be discarded as waste and is North America's largest such facility.

Prior to the crash, Tafisa used a rail connection to the main line to transport its products. After sitting idle for five days the plant resumed operations on Thursday, using trucks.

But shipping by truck is much more expensive than by rail and untenable over the long term, the mayor said.

The Quebec government plans this week to unveil an emergency aid plan for the town's businesses, in addition to the C$10 million ($9.6 million) that were part of a C$60 million emergency fund set aside for companies.

Despite deep anger at the management of the railway operator - Montreal, Maine and Atlantic Railway - over the accident, the town's residents say they want the railroad to remain but with better regulation and a ban on transporting oil and gas through the center of their own town.

"For industry yes, but for the oil and gas transport, I don't think so," Rejean Champagne, a resident of a condo in the evacuation zone, said when asked if the railway should reopen.

Ghislain Bolduc, who represents Lac-Megantic in predominantly French-speaking Quebec's provincial assembly, said the town's economy was inextricably tied to the railway.

"It has been the economic engine of this town for 145 years and it is still the economic engine. So do you want it to disappear? Or you want it to be there, but in a proper way?"

Rebuilding the economy will take years and many residents, like Lafontaine, are too busy grieving for lost ones to think far out.

"Everyone is in mourning, everyone is crying," he said of his employees.

Officials: Attacks on Iraqi Shiites kill 24

BAGHDAD (AP) ? Iraqi officials say two overnight attacks against Shiites have killed at least 24 people and wounded 49.

A police officer says a suicide bomber rammed his explosives-laden motorcycle into a funeral tent for a Shiite family in Muqdadiyah, killing 13 people. The town is about 90 kilometers (60 miles) north of Baghdad.

The mayor of the northern town of Dujail says a parked car bomb went off outside a Shiite mosque there late on Thursday.

Nayif al-Khazrachi says as people gathered around the blast site, another bomb went off. The twin bombing killed at least 11 people. Dujail is about 80 kilometers (50 miles) from Baghdad.

Two medical officials confirmed the casualty figures. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity as they were not authorized to talk to the media.

Phil Spencer, Aaron Greenberg staying with Xbox team following Microsoft reorg

Gaming executives Phil Spencer and Aaron Greenberg are staying with the Xbox team following the departure of Don Mattrick to Zynga and a major reorganization that saw Julie Larson-Green take over all-things Xbox this week.

Both executives confirmed the news on Twitter.

Spencer said, "Still head of Microsoft Studios and happy with the new org and announce of Julie." Meanwhile, Greenberg tweeted, "Wanted to share I am staying w/team & Xbox, will be Chief of Staff for Devices & Studios reporting now to Julie Larson-Green."

Mattrick left his post as president of Microsoft's Interactive Entertainment Business (IEB) last week for a job as CEO of Zynga, where he is up to earn more than $40 million.

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer yesterday confirmed the long-rumored company-wide reorganization. The executive described a "One Microsoft" that will enable the company to operate at "greater speed, efficiency, and capability in a fast changing world."

Larson-Green, a 19-year Microsoft veteran, will head up Microsoft's new Devices and Studios Engineering Group, where she will look after every Microsoft hardware endeavor--including Xbox.

The Xbox One launches in November for $500.

Fruitvale Station BART strike nhl draft dexter dexter Jim Kelly gabrielle union

NAPE says striking is ?not a viable option? ? for now - Union says government wants a public sector strike

Public-sector workers aren?t going on strike any time soon, despite the fact that their contract with the government expired more than a year ago.

In a video update to members posted on the Newfoundland and Labrador?Association of Public and Private Employees (NAPE) website late last month, president Carol Furlong addressed the possibility of a public service strike head-on, saying it?s ?not a viable option.?

She said she believes that?s what the government wants them to do.

?In recent times, government has demonstrated its willingness to use the power of the legislature to deny workers their right to strike and then to impose the terms of a collective agreement on us,? she said.

?Frankly, it is our belief that government anticipated we would strike last April and had intended to use the power of the legislature to impose an agreement.?

Speaking to The Telegram, Furlong said the negotiations with the government over the past year have been ?extremely frustrating? and that the process has essentially stalled.

At the bargaining table, Furlong told members progress has been made on minor items, but the government has made no monetary offer, and has asked for concessions on severance pay.

?If there?s nothing on the table for us except concessions, why would we be in a rush to accept that?? Furlong said to The Telegram.

She said? she met directly with Finance Minister Jerome Kennedy in June to break the logjam,

and at the end of it, she was ?optimistic? that things could get moving again.

?Unfortunately, even though we were assured they would call us by now, we have not had a followup call from government and there is still no offer on substantive issues,? Furlong told members in her video message.

The Telegram requested an interview with Kennedy for this story, but was told by a spokeswoman for the Department of Finance that, ?there will be no comment while negotiations are ongoing.?

Because the union thinks the government will just legislate members back to work, NAPE?says the strike option is out; instead, it?s just going to keep attacking the government in the media.

?The goal is designed to gain support for public services and public employees, to bring attention to government?s agenda, including dismantling and privatizing public services , and the devastating impact this agenda will have on workers, your communities, and the people of our province,? Furlong said.

Furlong specifically highlighted the union?s recent advertising campaign, ?Have Province, Have People? as an example of the sort of action it will take.

?This is a different era for bargaining, and we need to strategize differently than we have in the past,? Furlong said. ?At the end of the day, we have taken an approach that is through the media and we do have several options available to us, some which we don?t really see to be viable for us.?

Furlong wouldn?t talk about the union?s strategy in the future, or what it thinks the endgame will be.

But in her video message, she warned members that the current strategy might take a while.

?This approach requires patience and its goal can only be evaluated and realized over a longer time frame,? she said. ?We believe this is the most viable option at this point. We are now working on our next advertising campaign.?

Maryland providing affordable, reliable energy for local economies with SolarCity partnership

Date
11 July 2013

NEW YORK: A partnership between SolarCity and Walmart is boosting solar energy generation in the US state of Maryland, giving the green light for local businesses to invest in cost-efficient solar power.

Last week, leading retailer Walmart announced ten big solar installations across its stores in the state, made possible through a partnership with SolarCity.

About 4.1 million kilowatt hours of electric can be generated by the installations, which is enough to power up to 20% of each of the involved stores.

Lyndon Rive, CEO, SolarCIty,?said: ?Walmart is a leader in clean energy here in Maryland and across the country. Walmart is setting an example for companies in Maryland to follow; it?s possible for many Maryland businesses to pay less for solar power than they currently pay for electricity.?

The partnership and installations add to the already surging solar investments in Maryland, due to the state?s bold clean energy policies. In 2012, Maryland installed 74.3 megawatts of solar energy, according to the Solar Energy Industries Association.

Martin O?Malley, Governor of Maryland,?commented: ?In Maryland, we?ve set some of the most ambitious goals in the nation for advancing clean renewable energy and creating green jobs. We?re helping businesses take advantage of solar incentives so they can save money while embracing the job-creating, planet-saving potential of our green economy. I commend the partnership between SolarCity and Walmart as a significant step forward toward a more sustainable future for generations to come.?

The announcement comes days after President Obama?s renewed commitment to clean energy investment.

Amy Davidsen, US Executive Director, The Climate Group,?said: "While we welcome the recent climate and clean energy commitments by Obama, states like Maryland are wasting no time in moving ahead to develop their own competitive advantage in numerous emerging clean tech sectors, creating jobs and providing affordable, reliable energy for local economies.

?Such leadership at the sub-national level and collaboration with top businesses will continue to play its own critical role in the overall US response to climate change and low carbon growth in the years to come."

Rubio sets conditions for backing debt deficit deals this fall

Washington Examiner Thursday 11th July, 2013

With the Senate's comprehensive immigration package passed, Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., on Thursday previewed his next moves for upcoming fall clashes over the debt and deficit. Having spent much of this year as a vocal advocate for immigration reform, an issue that didn't sit well with the GOP's conservative base, Rubio pledged to oppose funding bills, including an increase in the nation's borrowing limits, unless the measures advance conservative demands for greater restraint on government spending. Rubio said he would not support a continuing resolution that funds government on a temporary ...

How Social Media Influences Business, Generates Leads And ...

Did you know that 27 percent of the total time spent online is now dedicated to social networking?

What if I told you that 84 percent of online shoppers use social media sites, that social media produces almost double the leads of trade shows, telemarketing, direct mail and cost per click (CPC) marketing, or that social media lead conversion rates are 13 percent higher than the average?

Indeed, more than 50 percent of marketers believe that social media has helped them improve sales. Moreover, the vast majority of consumers (78 percent) say that social media posts from brands inspired them to make a purchase, and more than four in five (81 percent) are influenced into making purchase decisions by social media posts from friends.

This infographic from Go-Gulf.com takes a closer look at how social media influences business.

Artifacts | Cats, the New Rulers of the Art World - NYTimes.com

When it comes to art, cats are like the second sex. What is the feline equivalent of Jeff Koons?s giant flowering ?Puppy?? Where is the painting of a snarling tabby to counter Francis Bacon?s feral mutt? Are fluffy cats not worthy of the same serious treatment as Edwin Landseer?s regal hounds or David Hockney?s beloved pooches? Who is the William Wegman of the whisker set?

At long last, a correction is upon us. You can hear it in the piercing meows that emanate from one of the artworks at ?The Cat Show,? a no-claws-barred group exhibition at the nonprofit White Columns gallery. And you can see it in more than 50 examples of cat portraiture executed in every possible medium (including the holographic) by artists that include both heavy hitters like Andy Warhol, Richard Prince and Elizabeth Peyton and lesser-known but notable talents like the aptly named Siobhan Meow, a transvestite whose work incorporates her own pets? feces, and John Hiltunen, a mentally disabled artist who makes priceless collages of cats as fashion plates.

Organized by the art critic and self-professed cat lady Rhonda Lieberman with the White Columns director Matthew Higgs, the show handily elevates kitty art above kitsch, while also pulling heartstrings. The entryway displays mug shots of adorable pets whose owners have died or abandoned them. They were not originally intended as works of art. They?re culled from a 2007 public service campaign by Animal Care & Control of New York City, there to signal Lieberman?s not-so-secret ulterior motive, which is to save forgotten pets from being euthanized.

Lieberman?s heart is in the ingenious, art-appointed cat habitat at the center of the gallery, designed by the Freecell architects John Hartman and Lauren Crahan with Gia Wolff. On weekends during the run of the show, live kittens up for adoption from Social Tees Animal Rescue pull on a dangling calico mobile by the sculptor Lucky DeBellvue, climb into a colossal litter box by Rob Pruitt, lie on cat mats by Ruth Root and scratch at palettes constructed by the artist Joe Scanlan with vintage, limited-edition geometric carpeting by Gerhard Richter. (These and the other works in the habitat are for sale to benefit the rescue group.)

?The original idea for the show was really only the habitat, to create a place for the cats to hang out,? said Lieberman, who is currently ?holding steady? with just two cats at home. ?Matthew wanted to have more pictorial things that weren?t necessarily just for cats, so the show got very aesthetic, but it?s really more of a social sculpture that uses art as a conduit for rescue.?

It works. The Warhol, a line drawing from the 1950s, depicts cat fur as if it were curled and mascaraed eyelashes. Prince?s collage features a pulp book cover with a babelicious pinup. A suite of watercolors by Ann Craven catches a litter of kittens seemingly at birth. A photograph of a spectacular white Persian by Michele Abeles hangs beside ?the last picture? that Eileen Quinlan took of her aging black tabby. Magdalena Frimkess?s striped ceramic cat adds a touch of folk art genius. Frances Stark seems to have spent much of the last 15 years making videos of the cat in her studio. The filmmaker Gus Van Zant did the same, with guitar accompaniment, in a 1989 home movie. Cory Arcangel mashes up YouTube videos of cats creditably tickling the ivories of their owners? pianos. Mark Lecky soulfully captures the spirit of the enterprise with an animated cat tail that wags with the hypnotic rhythm of a metronome.

?I?ve been trying to make this happen since 1999,? Lieberman said. ?It?s a huge saga, kind of poignant now.? And, as she likes to say, kind of purr-fect.

?The Cat Show? continues through July 27 at White Columns, 320 West 13th Street;?whitecolumns.org. There will be on-site adoptions July 12-13 and July 19-20.

Cloud brightening to cool seas can protect coral reefs: Targeted cooling could offer a 50-year 'breathing space' for coral protection

[unable to retrieve full-text content]The seeding of marine clouds to cool sea surface temperatures could protect threatened coral reefs from being bleached by warming oceans. Recent research proposes that a targeted version of the geo-engineering technique could give coral a fifty year ?breathing space? to recover from acidification and warming.

Two-way Bluetooth communication made easy - Hack a Day

two-way-bluetooth-with-Android

It?s hard to imagine an easier way to set up communications between an Android device and an Arduino using Bluetooth than by following this guide. In the center of the breadboard you can see the cheap and ubiquitous HC-05 Bluetooth module. Having picked up one of these ourselves we can attest that after opening the package and holding one in your hand you may be struck with a ?where do I start?? conundrum. If you?ve got an Android handset and an?Arduino you start right here, then methodically replace one side of the equation at a time until your own project has a Bluetooth component and you actually understand how it works.

Hardware for the project comes in a couple of parts. The Bluetooth module wants 3.3v logic levels so that is taken into account. The image above shows a buffer chip doing the conversion, but the Fritzing schematic on the post uses a voltage divider. The software end of things consists of an Arduino sketch and an Android app. Check out all the controls on that screen. With bi-directional communications and a slew of already-configured commands this should get you up and running quickly on pretty much any possible project.

One thing to note is that there are different firmwares for these HC-05 units. For more on that see this project.

Minutes After Rick Perry's TX Announcement, WashPost Lectures: Don't Run for President!

On Monday, Governor Rick Perry (R-Texas) announced he would not seek a fourth term as chief executive of the Lone Star State, saying the time had come ?to pass on the mantle of leadership.?

It took the liberal media roughly 30 minutes to begin what will no doubt be an onslaught against the former presidential candidate, with the Washington Post?s Chris Cillizza offering all the reasons why Perry ?shouldn?t run for president again.?

Cillizza, like many in the media through Monday afternoon, couldn?t help but bring up the governor?s now-infamous debate gaffes from the 2012 campaign, including ?his inability to recall the third federal agency he would eliminate if elected president.? The Post reporter blasted the 2012 Republican presidential field as ?one of the weakest in recent memory? and Perry as ?an unsteady presence on the campaign trail.?

The media?s assault on Perry is nothing new. In the last few weeks, journalists have attacked the Texas governor for getting ?very personal? with pro-choice state senator Wendy Davis.

Cillizza almost gleefully noted that ?the Perry band has broken up,? citing members of the governor?s ?inner circle? leaving his political team. He closed with a remark on the all-important element of timing in politics:

The timing in 2012 lined up perfectly for Perry ? and he still swung and missed. That?s a hard lesson but one Perry would do well to remember as he mulls his next political move.

Cillizza?s claims regarding Perry?s timing are debatable, given that the thrice-elected Texas governor had just come off back surgery and was the last major candidate to enter the race when he announced back in August 2011.

The 2:50 p.m. post came mere hours after the reporter shrugged his shoulders at former New York governor Elliot Spitzer?s (D) announcement that he would seek election as New York City?s next comptroller:

The real question as it relates to Spitzer is whether he can win. The answer, according to interviews with a handful of New York City political consultant types, is quite clearly ?yes.?

Cillizza doesn?t have much to say about the disgraced Democratic governor?s political comeback attempt ? but he seems perfectly content to pummel a Republican governor for a decision he hasn?t even made.

Then again, this kind of rhetoric is unsurprising coming from Cillizza. This is the same ?reporter? who confessed he couldn?t ?get enough? of Hillary Clinton in February. He did not offer a list of reasons she should avoid another presidential bid.

Cillizza also demanded Mitt Romney kowtow to the liberal media immediately after his nomination for president in 2012.

Read Cillizza?s full post here.

Polish PM Tusk loses bellwether regional election

WARSAW (Reuters) - The party of Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk lost an election for mayor of a provincial city that had been one of his strongholds, a sign of the toll the economic slump is taking on the government's popularity.

The city of Elblag, near Poland's Baltic Sea coast, has a population of only 124,000, but it took on nationwide significance after Tusk traveled there several times to campaign for his party's candidate.

Jerzy Wilk, of the conservative opposition party Law and Justice, won Sunday's election with 52 percent of the vote, against 48 percent for the candidate from Tusk's Civic Platform party, official results showed. Civic Platform had previously held the mayor's office.

"This is a signal that we can win in the country," said Adam Hoffman, a member of parliament with Law and Justice.

Polish voters will decide whether to keep Tusk's government when the next parliamentary election takes place in 2015. He has overseen a period of political stability, and investors worry the next government could be more volatile.

A survey last month by pollster CBOS showed national support for Civic Platform at 23 percent against 26 percent for Law and Justice.

Pressure mounts on BBC over 'sexist' gaffe by presenter

By Belinda Goldsmith

LONDON (Reuters) - The BBC faced mounting pressure on Sunday to take action against one its most high-profile sports presenters for criticising the appearance of France's Marion Bartoli who won this year's Wimbledon women's singles title.

John Inverdale incensed radio listeners before Bartoli beat German Sabine Lisicki when he asked if people thought her father told her when little that she was never going to be "a looker" like Maria Sharapova so would have to fight harder for success.

The BBC, Britain's publicly funded broadcaster, apologised for the comments after a storm of protests on Twitter, admitting the remark was "insensitive".

Inverdale said on Sunday he had written to apologise to Bartoli and told listeners ahead of Sunday' men's final that he used "a clumsy phrase" about Bartoli in trying to make a point that not all players need to be "6 ft fall Amazonian athletes".

But the apology from the 55-year-old, who has presented BBC shows since the 1980s, failed to calm the fury about his remark made 24 hours earlier and the lack of action taken by the BBC.

"This is appalling. Tennis is one of the worst offenders in sport in terms of the focus on women athletes' looks and the BBC needs to take action," Sue Tibbals, chief executive of the Women's Sports and Fitness Foundation, told Reuters.

"I thought Bartoli was an absolute inspiration, so spirited and gutsy, and she does not deserve these outrageous remarks. This is not a one-off event from this presenter."

A BBC spokesman, however, said the corporation had apologised and so had Inverdale and that there were no plans for further action to be taken.

Bartoli, 28, won the admiration of Centre Court on Saturday when she won her first grand slam title in a straight-sets victory over 23-year-old Lisicki that earned her 1.6 million pounds ($2.4 million) in prize money.

The Frenchwoman, celebrating her success in becoming the first Frenchwoman in seven years to win the coveted Wimbledon women's title, shrugged off Inverdale's comments.

"It doesn't matter, honestly. I am not blonde, yes. That is a fact," Bartoli said in a press briefing late on Saturday.

"Have I dreamt about having a model contract? No. I'm sorry. But have I dreamed about winning Wimbledon? Absolutely, yes."

Twitter users praised Bartoli's dignity as they called on the BBC to act against Inverdale.

Many of the Tweets included the hashtag "Everyday Sexism", which has gathered a large following as people tweet examples of causal sexism in the workplace and public life.

"Isn't it time the BBC woke up to the sexism at the heart of its sport broadcasting?" tweeted feminist blogger Leopard.

"#BBC apology over sexism comments not good enough. suspend #Inverdale & hold enquiry. Sexism is on par with racism," tweeted yvonneridley.

The incident came after the BBC has this year faced one of the biggest crises in its 90-year history.

A sex scandal involving the late TV presenter Jimmy Savile threw the broadcaster into turmoil and raised questions about the organisation's ethics, leading to the appointment of a new head, Tony Hall.

art-of-swords:

Italian Parade Sword

  • Dated: Late 15th century, the guard and pommel possibly refitted in the 18th-19th century
  • Measurements: Overall length 112cm

The broad blade of sharply tapering form consistent with Oakeshott Type XV is forged with a high median ridge and marked with a trefoil at either side. The forte is finely worked with figures on both sides, probably Biblical, and inlaid with gold. The stepped grip of horn is inlaid with mother of pearl panels, lightly-recurved guard and fig-shaped pommel of copper heavily gilt, superbly engraved overall in elaborate vine motifs.

A quite similar example was sold at Sotheby?s Hever Castle Sale in May, 1983, lot 121. Of a small but known type of Renaissance swords, four of which are documented, see volume I, p. 108 of the Hever Castle Arms & Armour Sale catalog. Deaccessioned from the John Woodman Higgins Armory Museum, Worcester, Ma. Acquired by the Higgins from the American Art Association Auction, New York, of October 10-15, 1932, from the Morosini Collection, lot 525.
