Koss intros Striva headphone systems, lets you stream music over WiFi straight to your ears

Image

Koss may be known for its budget-minded offerings in the headphone space, but today it's announced something to shake things up a bit. Falling under the Striva moniker, Koss has created what it claims to be the first lineup of headphones to use "WiFi technology that receives music directly from the Internet without wires." To start, there's the over-ear Pro model, loaded with gesture controls for volume and channel adjustments, while an in-ear set, dubbed Tap, is also available for extra portability. Interestingly, the Taps don't use a connecting wire -- instead, "microprocessors" inside of of each earpiece consistently ensure that the stereo signal is staying in sync. To elaborate, both models feature Koss' Core, which the company describes as battery-powered microprocessors coupled with WiFi components. Utilizing the company's new MyKoss server, you'll be able to pull content from a variety of free audio streams, and customize your own listening experience with the included music management software. Lastly, if you don't have a WiFi connection -- in cases such as using your cellphone -- each unit comes with a "matchbook-sized" Content Access Point, which lets you easily create a WiFi hub of sorts to enable wireless listening wherever you are.

If these headphones have piqued your interest, get ready for the kicker: the Taps are priced at $500, while the Pros are set at a slightly cheaper $450. Both models are available from Koss today, and you'll find more info in the press release and video just after the break.

Keeping older drivers on the road

ScienceDaily (Apr. 22, 2012) ? A unique research car which monitors our concentration, stress levels and driving habits while we're sat behind the steering wheel is being used to develop new technologies to support older drivers.

The Intelligent Transport team at Newcastle University have converted an electric car into a mobile laboratory.

Dubbed 'DriveLAB', the car is kitted out with tracking systems, eye trackers and bio-monitors in an effort to understand the challenges faced by older drivers and to identify where the key stress points are.

Research shows that giving up driving is one of the key factors responsible for a fall in health and well-being among older people, leading to them becoming more isolated and inactive.

Led by Professor Phil Blythe, the Newcastle team are investigating in-vehicle technologies for older drivers which they hope could help them to continue driving into later life.

These include bespoke navigation tools, night vision systems and intelligent speed adaptations. Phil Blythe, Professor of Intelligent Transport Systems at Newcastle University, explains: "For many older people, particularly those living alone or in rural areas, driving is essential for maintaining their independence, giving them the freedom to get out and about without having to rely on others.

"But we all have to accept that as we get older our reactions slow down and this often results in people avoiding any potentially challenging driving conditions and losing confidence in their driving skills. The result is that people stop driving before they really need to.

"What we are doing is to look at ways of keeping people driving safely for longer, which in turn boosts independence and keeps us socially connected."

Funded by Research Councils UK's Digital Economy programme the research is part of the Social inclusion through the Digital Economy (SiDE) project, a ?12m research hub led by Newcastle University.

Using the new DriveLAB as well as the University's driving simulator, the team have been working with older people from across the North East and Scotland to understand their driving habits and fears and look at ways of overcoming them.

By incorporating the eye tracker and bio-monitor with the driving simulator the team are able to monitor eye movement, speed, reaction, lane position, acceleration, braking and driving efficiency.

Dr Amy Guo, the leading researcher on the older driver study, explains: "The DriveLAB is helping us to understand what the key stress triggers and difficulties are for older drivers and how we might use technology to address these problems.

"For example, most of us would expect older drivers always go slower than everyone else but surprisingly, we found that in 30mph zones they struggled to keep at a constant speed and so were more likely to break the speed limit and be at risk of getting fined.

"We're looking at the benefits of systems which control your speed as a way of preventing that." Another solution is a tailored SatNav which uses pictures as turning cues, such as a post box or public house.

Researcher Chris Emmerson, explains: "One thing that came out of the focus groups was that while the older generation is often keen to try new technologies it's their lack of experience with, and confidence in, digital technologies which puts them off. Also, they felt most were designed with younger people in mind."

The work is being presented at the Aging, Mobility and Quality of Life conference in Michigan in June. Edmund King, AA president and Visiting Professor of Transport at Newcastle University, said: "The car is a life-line for many older people as it helps keep them mobile, independent and connected to friends and family. The AA Charitable Trust has helped thousands of older drivers with our free "Drive Confident" courses but we feel that the pioneering work of DriveLAB will help with technological solutions to ensure that older drivers stay safer behind the wheel."

The driving simulator is also being used to look at how distractions such as answering a mobile phone, sending a text or eating can affect our driving.

Marketing a Business Through Online Advertising - Internet Based ...

Advertising is very important for the smooth running of a business and signage is one form of online advertising. When you start a business or release a new product into the market, no one would know that you are running so and so business or that you are selling so and so product unless if you take them to the public. Therefore you have to count on various advertising strategies for the enhancement of your business, such as web marketing. Some of the methods of advertising are television ads, paper and journal ads, online ads and signage.

Advertisements play a huge part of our lives. As more and more advertisements are coming each day, business people are looking for a individual and effective method of advertisement, such as online advertising, that will reach people fast. In this race, the signage has gained much importance. They are placed on the highways, airport, railway stations, and shopping malls and in most of the public places. The places in which you can see crowd, you can see signage also.

There are three factors of signage: lightless signage, backlit signage and front lit signage and each one can be detailed through web marketing. When you drive in highways or go jogging or walking you can find them shown in different places. This will get into the minds of people and convince them to purchase the product. The backlit signage is a form of advertisement in which the lights are placed at the back. The lights are secured on them so that they are visible even during the dark times of the night. When you place the lights behind them they will look bright and visible. The invisible signage is not visible in the dark and you can see them only during the day time.

The front lit signage is deemed to be the best of all because they light the boards more brightly. The lights are placed either on the top or in the bottom or in both directions. This will make them look as clear as possible even during the night time. As some people go out in the streets after the fall of the day, it is very important to have the signage visible when it?s dark.

The front lit signage is less pricey than back lit signage. If the lights have to be placed on the back, the printing must be done on thin materials. By doing this, the material would permit light to pass through. This material is quite expensive and so front lit signage is more affordable and best of its kind.

Video: Scandal rocks Secret Service

>> nbc news white house correspondent mike viqueira joins us. we're up to 20. it was a dozen before. as many as 20 now. what else can you tell us?

>> you can add military personnel who were allegedly involved in this. as a matter of fact, the military in the form of the southern command based in miami has an investigator winging their way to to the hotel in colombia where these incidents allegedly took place. as many as five military personnel could be more than that. the secretary of defense and the chief of staff will be briefing on this in a very short time. one wla a distraction for the white house this has been over the weekend. they're loathe to make these trips any way. it wasn't going to make news domestically. the president and the staff doing all they can to turn this around to talk about the american economy in the context of the western hemispheric economy at large. and then this incident that happened before the president even got there. overshadowed everything that they were trying to do. a lot of frustration on the part of the white house . the president arriving late last night. early this morning in the wee hours . we haven't had any briefings from the white house at all. we should point out that a lot of the criticism being directed at the secret service at this point, even from people who are normally very partisan or strident or outspoken of the president and this west wing , it has largely been confined to the secret service and their conduct. you mentioned after the initial reports of the 11 members of the secret service , it was mentioned they were only the uniformed secret service now. we learned from others, we've got a whole team of report orders this story now. that they included some of the counter assault team . a very elite, highly skilled unit. they're an ubiquitous presence here. we haven't heard the end of this story. new details have been emerging throughout the day.

>> thank you. this scandal is certainly prompting talk of possible hearings on capitol hill . it is also raising questions of whether there are bigger problems within the agency's culture. listen to what congressman darrell it issa, the cheryl of the overhouse had to say.

>> we've got to ask, where are the systems in place to prevent this in the future. it is the reason the investigation will not be about the 11 to 20 or more involved. it will be about how did this happen and how often has this hampden before? things like this don't happen once.

>> w. ralph basham headed the secret service . you heard congressman issa say if this happened once, it's happened before . what's your take?

>> if he has information that this has occurred in the past, which i'm not aware of, then i would suggest he contact the proper authorities of the secret service for an investigation on this. i don't believe, i do not believe this has been a problem within the service. otherwise we would have seen this before.

>> we just revealed, nbc news has learned as many as 20 secret service personnel now involved in this investigation. initially the number was around 11. why do you think it has nearly doubled? is it perhaps a chain of command? they're bringing in everyone, any and everyone to get to the bottom of what was going on there and who was involved.

>> i can assure you, they are going to get to the bottom of this. and first of all, all of the facts on this particular incident, that's why they're doing an investigation and they will be doing, i would suspect, a lot of people regarding this including those in colombia. the staff in the hotel. the others involved, that were involved down there. i don't think we should rest on this until we have the facts. i don't think we should rush to judgment. i'm sure the white house and secretary napolitano as well as congress will demand their own investigation.

>> to your point no, rush to judgment. we are learning more about the individuals who are being talked to or questioned in this investigation. three of them were members of the elite counter-assault team. what does that team do?

>> well, they are a support element. they are uniformed division officers and their responsibility is do counter assault. and they go wherever the president goes.

>> are you confident, the information you know and the history that you've had with the agency, are you confident again that this is a single issue to be investigated? many people have brought up, for example, one of those reality tv people were able to get past security into the state dinner .

>> right. that was an isolated incident. and i don't think the two should be compared in making a judgment with a systemic problem within the secret service . have their been individual situations where individuals have gotten themselves into situations where they have to be brought back? yes. that's happened. certainly not in my memory has it been one of this magnitude but it will be treated as seriously as all these cases are treated seriously.

>> w. ralph basham . form he head of the secret service . thank you.

Laura Prudom: 'Gossip Girl' Recap: Chuck's Mama Drama Spices Up 'Salon Of The Dead'

Note: Do not read on if you have not seen Season 5, Episode 20 of The CW's "Gossip Girl," entitled "Salon of the Dead."

Oh, "Gossip Girl," why must you tease me so? Just when I think we're making progress, with last week's episode demonstrating some nostalgically sharp writing and logical character progression, along comes an episode like "Salon of the Dead," which was so by the numbers it could've been painted by an eight-year-old with a DIY kit and tiny paintbrush.

The separate pieces were all promising: Lola on the verge of discovering Serena's secret; the truth about Chuck's mother finally coming to light; Dan and Blair hosting a fabulous soiree at which every conceivable catastrophe occurs; an actual storyline for Rufus and Lily. And yet the sum of its parts failed to add up to an entertaining whole. The writing felt flat, the scathing wit was nowhere to be found, and every character's actions were painfully predictable.

The episode could've provided some insightful examination of why Serena's so insecure and so intent on sabotaging every potentially good friendship she's ever had, but instead, her bust-up with Lola had her cousin fleeing the UES like every other disposable character the show has introduced over the past five years, and Serena falling further down the rabbit hole of self-absorption and petty jealousy. Is it too much to ask for women in primetime to celebrate each other's successes instead of bitching and backstabbing and focusing so intently on their men or their money or their perceived importance that they lose all sense of self? This is "Gossip Girl," so of course it is.

This week, I'm dispensing with our usual list of OMG moments, if only because everything felt so telegraphed, there were no truly shocking revelations. Yes, as we all predicted, Diana is indeed Chuck's birth mother. Apparently, she and Bart had an affair while Bart was still with the elusive Elizabeth, and the affair ended once she became pregnant. Then, when Elizabeth discovered that she couldn't naturally conceive, she agreed to raise Chuck as her own. Apparently, Diana had come to the city to watch over Chuck from afar, but somehow decided that screwing his best friend was a better course of action instead. Hmm.

While the majority of Chuck and Diana's heart-to-heart was fairly reasonable, to me, there's no justifying a mother knowingly entering into a sexual relationship with her son's BFF, and the "if you never found out the truth, what's the harm?" excuse doesn't hold much water, even by "Gossip Girl" standards. It's icky no matter which way you slice it, and it just plays like the writers wanted to introduce Elizabeth Hurley's character in a salacious way to distract us from the possibility of her being Chuck's mom early on, but were too lazy to think up a justifiable explanation for her sleeping with Nate when the time came for the big reveal. Lazy storytelling. The only question remaining is what Diana's other big secret could be, and how it could possibly be a bigger bombshell than being Chuck Bass' long-lost mother.

I was expecting a little more razzle-dazzle from both the Diana revelation and Lola discovering that Serena was Gossip Girl, because the show is entirely capable of producing those "OMG" moments when it puts some effort into it. Sadly, both Lola and Serena were being so obvious this week, it was clear that the show had no intention of providing us with a juicy twist. Of course Lola would be suspicious if Gossip Girl put up a post that repeated Lola's unflattering comments about a director verbatim, just a few minutes after she'd had a private conversation with Serena about it. It wasn't at all realistic for Serena to be so blatant about using a private conversation for a very specific blast, and while I know that realism doesn't enter into many of the show's narrative choices, Serena knows how to cover her tracks far better than that -- she's always been the queen of manipulating the paparazzi and using her influence to get her way, so for her to be so careless in dealing with Lola (forget about ever leaving her phone unattended in a public place) is wholly uncharacteristic.

The writers have been a little more consistent about building Dan and Blair's romance (even if it's apparently to the detriment of all other character development on the show), and their moment in bed, arguing about art, was a sweet and realistic touch, given their personalities. Sadly, the rest of their storyline was fairly bland, with yet another rehash of the Upper East Side vs. Brooklyn debate that Dan and Serena had in the first couple of seasons. We get that they don't fit into each other's worlds, and it's a somewhat tired storyline at this point -- although it was a relief to see them reaching a sensible compromise over their culture clash, unlike Rufus and Lily. I'm also consistently amused that no matter how many "celebrity" cameos the show scores, whether it's Tim Gunn, Vera Wang, April Bloomfield or Julian Tepper and Jenna Gribbon, apparently no normal human beings can "act" like themselves. I'm not sure whether that's a criticism of the writing or whether non-actors just fail at scripted cameos in general, but it's always painful to watch.

Speaking of Rufus and Lily, I admire the show's attempt to give them something to do, but at this point I have to wonder whether the majority of "Gossip Girl's" audience actually cares about their marital issues or just glazes over when they're on-screen. For my part, I hope Rufus goes scorched earth on Lily cancelling his debit card as well as declining his credit card -- seriously low blow. And where did Daddy van der Woodsen disappear to? I guess they'll dust him and Lola back off for the finale, just in time for everyone to be super shocked that Serena and Lola aren't just cousins, but also half-sisters. Drama!

Did you enjoy "Salon of the Dead"? What do you think Diana's other secret is, and how did Gossip Girl discover it? Did you hope Lola might reveal Serena's secret identity to everyone on her way out? Weigh in below.

"Gossip Girl" airs Mondays at 8 p.m. ET on The CW.
