(AP) ? Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich wept Friday as he recalled his late mother's end-of-life illnesses, a moment of poignancy in a notably negative Republican presidential Iowa caucus campaign with four unpredictable days yet to run.

"I do policy much easier than I do personal," Gingrich told an audience of women as he tried to regain his composure. The tears flowed as the former speaker was responding to questions about his mother from a pollster and longtime political ally.

Gingrich's emotional moment came as his rivals engaged in traditional campaign tactics, and as polls suggested large numbers of Iowa Republicans could change their minds before caucuses Tuesday night provide the first test of the 2012 campaign.

Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney sought to marginalize his closest pursuer in most polls, saying, "I don't think Ron Paul represents the mainstream of Republican thought with regards to issues, particularly in foreign policy."

Paul gave no ground. "I really can't conceive" of intervening militarily to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons, he said, unequivocally restating his position on an issue on which he differs with Romney and his other rivals.

Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum, claiming momentum based on recent polls, told reporters he recently had the best fundraising day of his candidacy. Yet he also drew criticism from Texas Gov. Rick Perry for advocating earmarks during two terms in the Senate.

Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann became the latest presidential hopeful to hold a campaign event with Iowa Rep. Steve King ? and the latest to hear him say he wasn't ready to give his endorsement.

Whatever the impact of Gingrich's tears on the race for the White House, the episode seemed destined to be replayed endlessly on televisions, personal computers and hand-held devices.

That was the case nearly four years ago, when Hillary Rodham Clinton appeared to choke back tears while campaigning in New Hampshire a few days before the state's Democratic presidential primary. The episode also became the subject of intense political analysis. Clinton won the primary in an upset a few days later.

Gingrich was surging in the polls a little more than a week ago, but was hit by a barrage of negative ads and has been struggling in recent days. Normally a combative politician, he shed tears as he appeared before a group of mothers and responded to a question from Frank Luntz, a Republican pollster and longtime ally of the former speaker.

Asked about his mother and an event in his life that influenced his policies and views, Gingrich recalled her as happy and having friends before she ended up in a long-term care facility suffering from bipolar disease, depression and physical ailments.

"My whole emphasis on brain science comes in directly from dealing with the real problems of real people," he said, his face distorting as he began to cry. "And so it's not a theory. It's, in fact, my mother," he said. Kathleen "Kit" Gingrich died in 2003. She was 77.

The event drew notice in New Hampshire, where Romney was campaigning a few hours later. As he mentioned his own parents, now deceased, a member of the audience interrupted, "Don't cry."

"I won't cry. But I do, I do. Nothing to be ashamed of in that regard," Romney said.

Romney, who leads in most polls in Iowa, criticized Paul in an interview with Fox News Channel.

"I don't think Ron Paul represents the mainstream of Republican thought with regards to issues, particularly in foreign policy," he said, referring to the Texan's statement that he would oppose military action to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.

At the same time he said Paul was outside the GOP mainstream, Romney pledged to support whoever wins the party's nomination to oppose President Barack Obama in the fall.

Campaigning later in western Iowa, Paul said he would probably have difficulty voting for any of the other Republicans in the race if they win the party nomination. "They all are part of the status quo," he said.

After months of campaigning and millions of dollars in television commercials, the polls depicted a race as unsettled and unpredictable as any in the four decades since Iowa's caucuses became the kickoff event in presidential campaigns.

A pair of surveys in the last five days suggested upwards of a third of all potential caucus-goers had not firmly settled on a candidate of choice.

The same polls made Romney the front-runner, and his decision to leave for a quick trip to New Hampshire and then return to Iowa and stay through caucus night projected optimism.

Paul views on Iran have been called into question this week by numerous other contenders, and Gingrich went so far as to say he would not vote for the Texan.

To some extent, Paul stands alone in the field because of his libertarian-leaning views. He does not want the government to have the power to ban abortions, for example, and has called for the legalization of some drugs that are now outlawed.

That has left Santorum, Gingrich, Perry and Bachmann to vie for standing as Romney's chief opponent in the competition for evangelical voters and other conservatives.

Even before the caucuses, Romney and the rest of the field were looking ahead to New Hampshire's primary on Jan. 10 and the first two Southern contests later in the month, in South Carolina and Florida.

But there was maneuvering yet to come in the state that precedes them all.

Allies of Gingrich announced they were airing a 30-minute program in Iowa produced by Newsmax, a conservative media outlet. It features Michael Reagan, son of the former president, who calls the former speaker "a person who we believe will help continue my father's legacy."

Nomura Narrowly Tops Goldman in Japan Merger Advice in 2011

December 30, 2011, 12:35 AM EST

By Takahiko Hyuga

(Updates with closing share price in fifth Paragraph.)

Dec. 29 (Bloomberg) -- Nomura Holdings Inc. pulled ahead of Goldman Sachs Group Inc. to hold on to the top spot for mergers and acquisitions advisory work in Japan in 2011, after the two competed neck and neck during the last two months.

Nomura, the nation?s largest brokerage, this year advised companies on 134 transactions worth $65.4 billion, including Takeda Pharmaceutical Co.?s $13.7 billion acquisition of Swiss drugmaker Nycomed, data compiled by Bloomberg show. Goldman Sachs came in second after handling 24 deals worth $62.3 billion, according to the data.

Retaining the No. 1 position will require Nomura to harness Japanese demand for overseas assets. Bolstered by a strong yen, Japan?s companies spent about $88.3 billion on overseas acquisitions in 2011, the most in any of the twelve years for which Bloomberg data is available. Nomura ranked fourth among advisers of such deals, behind Goldman Sachs, Credit Suisse Group AG and Deutsche Bank AG, the data show.

?Japanese companies will increase their presence even further next year as acquirers in cross-border mergers and acquisitions as they are in a relatively strong position in business and financial performance,? Nomura?s Joint Head of Global M&A Kentaro Okuda said in an interview. ?We are already seeing this trend in our pipeline of deals which will keep our M&A bankers busy through the New Year break.?

Nomura?s shares were unchanged at 235 yen at the 3 p.m. close of Tokyo Stock Exchange trading.

Left Out

Nomura competed with Goldman Sachs for the top position since October, when the New York-based bank took first place in the rankings after advising Sumitomo Metal Industries Ltd. in its $22.5 billion acquisition by Nippon Steel Corp. Nomura wasn?t involved with that deal, Japan?s biggest in at least five years.

Japan saw 2,261 transactions valued at $195.9 billion this year to Dec. 29, a record for the equivalent period, data compiled by Bloomberg show. A total of 795 Japanese firms, including Mitsubishi Corp., Kirin Holdings Co., Terumo Corp. and Tokio Marine Holdings Inc., made acquisitions overseas.

Nomura and Goldman Sachs were followed by Bank of America Corp., Deutsche Bank AG and Mizuho Financial Group Inc. in the rankings, according to the data. Goldman Sachs?s Tokyo-based spokeswoman Hiroko Matsumoto declined to comment on the advisory ranking.

Tapping Koizumi

Nomura has held the top position for five years. The Tokyo- based brokerage had a 33.4 percent market share this year, the lowest in three years, according to Bloomberg data.

Among the purchases on which Nomura offered advice this year was its own acquisition of affiliate Nomura Tochi Tatemono Co. for $11 billion. It also advised on Toshiba Corp.?s acquisition of nuclear-plant designer Westinghouse Electric Co. and Tokyo Stock Exchange?s merger with Osaka Securities Exchange.

Goldman Sachs, which hasn?t been No. 1 in Japan since 2006, is the top adviser for global mergers and acquisitions this year. It also advised Nycomed on its takeover by Takeda as well as with Hitachi Ltd. on its sale of a hard disk drive business to Western Digital Corp. for $4.3 billion.

As part of its efforts to secure business after the March 11 earthquake and tsunami, the U.S. bank tapped former Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi to speak to 300 investors and company executives at a forum in Tokyo in June.

The U.S. bank has donated at least 520 million yen ($6.7 million) to help with emergency relief efforts in the wake of Japan?s largest earthquake on record, the biggest donation among 161 financial firms in Japan, according to research conducted by Bloomberg News in April.

Nomura is ranked twelfth among acquisition advisers globally.

Appeals court delays SEC-Citigroup fraud case (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? The Securities and Exchange Commission won a delay in its securities fraud lawsuit against Citigroup Inc, as the regulator tries to appeal a judge's decision to reject its $285 million settlement with the bank.

The case will be put on hold until a motions panel on January 17 begins considering the SEC's bid for a longer delay so it can pursue an expedited appeal, the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in New York said in its order on Tuesday afternoon.

That order was made public 78 seconds before U.S. District Judge Jed Rakoff, who rejected the Citigroup settlement last month, issued a ruling opposing any delay in the case, court records show. Citigroup supported the SEC's request for a delay.

The rulings come as the SEC tries to ensure it can continue settling enforcement cases without requiring corporate defendants to address whether they did anything wrong.

That practice was called into question when Rakoff on November 28 harshly rejected the proposed settlement with New York-based Citigroup.

He said the SEC's failure to require Citigroup to admit or deny its charges left him no way to know whether the settlement was fair. Rakoff also called the $285 million payout "pocket change" for the third-largest U.S. bank.

But the SEC said that ruling was "legal error," at odds with decades of court decisions allowing such settlements and letting investors get faster recoveries, and could affect its ability to reach similar accords with other companies.

SEC spokesman John Nester declined to comment. Citigroup spokeswoman Danielle Romero-Apsilos repeated that the bank disagreed with Rakoff's November 28 decision, and would have "substantial factual and legal defenses" at a trial.

The October 19 settlement was intended to resolve charges that Citigroup sold $1 billion of risky mortgage-linked securities in 2007 without telling investors that it was betting against the debt, and caused more than $700 million of losses.

Citigroup's $285 million payment was to include $160 million of disgorged profit and fees, $30 million of interest and a $95 million civil fine.

IRREPARABLE HARM, OR ILLUSORY HARM?

In a filing on Tuesday morning with the 2nd Circuit, the SEC said the urgency to put the case on hold came after Rakoff in a teleconference this month told Citigroup to answer the charges by January 3, 2012 - or 27 days sooner than federal rules require.

An answer can force Citigroup to deny some or all of the SEC allegations, or seek to dismiss the case entirely.

But this would cause the SEC "irreparable harm" by forcing it to devote substantial resources to the case, and would "disrupt a central negotiated provision" in which Citigroup agreed not to deny the allegations, the regulator said.

In his decision on Tuesday, which the motions panel may choose to follow or not follow, Rakoff said it is "patently clear" there was no statutory basis to appeal his November 28 ruling, and "derail the orderly conduct" of the case.

The judge said this was because the appeal focused on his alleged error in demanding more facts about the case, rather than on the injunctive relief provided by the settlement.

He also said the alleged harm faced by the SEC was "largely illusory" because the regulator is pursuing a related case arising out of the same facts against a Citigroup employee, director Brian Stoker, who contests the regulator's charges.

The SEC has asked Congress for authority to seek larger penalties in corporate cases than the law now allows.

Rakoff has set a July 16, 2012 trial date.

The cases are SEC v Citigroup Global Markets Inc, 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, No. 11-05227; and U.S. District Court, Southern District of New York, No. 11-07387.

Football Daily Dose: Turner the Decliner

Tuesday, December 27, 2011

Remember when Michael Turner was known as ?The Burner?? That?s almost comical now.

At age 29, Turner is a shell of himself. He?s slow in the open field, can?t cut quick enough and almost always gets taken down by the first defender. Frankly, Turner appears chubby. Tack that on to his annual issue of catching no passes and coming off the field on all third-down plays, and what we have is a typical aging running back situation.

Turner isn?t going to turn his career path around at this point. He?s about to go over 300 carries for the third time in four seasons and his offense will only get better through the air. The artist formerly known as the Burner will be on all my ?do not draft? lists once again next year. In fact, he?ll be on my ?never draft again? list.

Here are some others running backs on that list as we begin to look to 2012:
* LeGarrette Blount - Runs to contact, can?t catch passes, has fumbling problem and doesn?t play on third downs or when his team is behind.

* Frank Gore - Will be 29 in May, asked to be an exclusive blocker in the pass offense now and quarterback?s limitations creates stacked boxes.

* Maurice Jones-Drew - His unbelievable 2011 campaign defies all logic. He came into the year with a knee injury, plays with the worst passing offense in football, sees eight men in box on every play and is still the league?s leading rusher. The price tag will not be worth the risk going forward. MJD is over 330 touches for the third straight season.

BREES SETS THE RECORD
With a 9-yard touchdown pass to Darren Sproles in the fourth quarter Monday night, Drew Brees set the NFL record for most passing yards in a single season. He passed Dan Marino?s mark of 5,084 yards, set in 1984.

Here?s a crazy thing to think about on Brees: He?s averaging 339.1 passing yards per game this season and has thrown 41 touchdowns. But he?s still fantasy?s No. 3 quarterback, well behind Aaron Rodgers and just back of Cam Newton.

FALCONS at SAINTS RANDOM THOUGHTS
Lance Moore aggravated his hamstring injury in the second quarter and called it a night. ? Love the way Julio Jones is willing to go over the middle. He?s explosive and will be better than Roddy White next year. ? I don?t know how Tony Gonzalez keeps doing it, but I wouldn?t bet on him doing it again next year. ? The Saints figure to be playing to win next week. If they win and the Rams somehow beat the Niners, the Saints will get a first-round bye.

INJURY QUICK SLANTS: QUARTERBACKS, WIDE RECEIVERS AND TIGHT ENDS ?
Tony Romo (hand) is going to be fine. ? Andre Johnson (hamstring) plans on playing in Week 17. ? Mario Manningham (knee) is questionable for Sunday night?s showdown with the Cowboys. ? Jake Ballard (knee) admitted he wouldn?t be able to play if the game was Monday. ? Anthony Fasano (concussion) still hasn?t been cleared.
?
INJURY CHART QUICK SLANTS: RUNNING BACKS
Kevin Smith (ankle) appears likely to rest in Week 17. ? Chris Johnson (ankle) took an injection to play in Week 16 and figures to do the same Week 17. ? James Starks aggravated his ankle. He?ll sit in the season finale. ? LeSean McCoy (ankle) is in doubt for the finale.

DEPTH CHART QUICK SLANTS? ?
The Lions are expected to play to win in Week 17. They don?t want to go to New Orleans in the first round. ? The Lions signed Joique Bell, who would serve as an emergency back if Kevin Smith (ankle) sits Sunday. ? Adrian Peterson is a good bet to start the 2012 season on the PUP list after testing revealed ACL, MCL, medial and lateral meniscus damage. ? Brandon Saine could be the Packers? featured back in Week 17 with the Packers resting players. ? Stevan Ridley has led the Patriots in carries for two straight weeks. ?

WAIVERS
DEFENSIVE SPOT STARTS
Adding a different defense/special teams each week based on matchups is a fine strategy. Here are units that might be on waivers to consider this week for streaming purposes:

1. BRONCOS vs. Chiefs - It?s do-or-die time for the Broncos, who get their old friend Kyle Orton at Mile High. Denver figures to play very aggressively in this one. ?

2. TITANS at Texans - Houston is locked into the No. 3 seed. They figure to rest most of their plays while the Titans need a win to keep their hopes alive.

3. FALCONS vs. Bucs - The Bucs gave up on their season about a month ago. Going through the motions against this Atlanta defense isn?t going to cut it.

About Automotive Mailing Lists : National Industrialization Day

Posted on | December 25, 2011 | Comments Off

About Automotive Mailing Lists

You are so easy to be discouraged while searching for quality automotive mailing lists because there are too many providers offering re-hashed and resold lists that are not up to date or accurate. They don?t know that accurate information is very important to most dealers and parts retailers.

?

Sometimes a warranty company may purchase bulk lists that were mostly inaccurate only to find it costs them more to have a bad list than the extra cost of an accurate and solid list. Finding this balance is critical for any direct marketing effort and is imperative for a successful campaign.

?

Some of the better automotive mailing lists include ?up to date? (weekly updated) year make and model data. To find out how accurate a vendor is, you should be asking questions like ?when was the file last updated?? and ?how many new records come into the system on a typical update?? You should see a consistency in the answers and the ability to test small and grow is critical instead of throwing all of your eggs into one basket so to speak.

In addition to the year, make and model data, credit data offers two great products.

?

For subprime buyers, credit scored data along with current loan information such as how many months are remaining and the size of the loan and monthly payments are useful for direct marketing. Some dealers that will target those that have marginal credit that have less than 3 months remaining on their current car. This audience is great because though they look forward to not having a car payment, many are already ready to get a new car. Your ability to target repeatedly this audience will pay-off as they start to consider buying their next vehicle.

Another variation of the credit score automotive mailing list is the credit triggered list which should come out daily.

?

These daily triggers are the most potent form of automotive mailing lists that currently exists. One of the biggest issues that dealers have is that these trigger leads exist. Their controversy can be your edge if you embrace the idea that people like to shop. Some of the best deals are closed after a customer has looked around first and that is why triggers have been a staple of the credit bureau database for so long. There is no better way to find interested and qualified buyers period. The biggest drawback is that they have already gone to a funding source for a quote but that does not mean you can?t come in with a better offer (better car and better financing package).

?

The challenge in general with automotive mailing lists is to find the one that is reasonably priced but that is highly targeted. Generating a massive qualified response and selling cars is what the name of the game is so make sure you have a vendor that gets it and a mailing list that is both targeted and accurate otherwise you are just throwing money down the tube.

Searching For A Ghost Bird

Copyright ? 2011 National Public Radio?. For personal, noncommercial use only. See Terms of Use. For other uses, prior permission required.

IRA FLATOW, HOST:

This is SCIENCE FRIDAY. I'm Ira Flatow. Birding. Birding doesn't seem like a risky pastime, does it? What's the worst that could happen? Sunburn, a little rain, a little cold, lost binoculars. Well, not always. In 2010, Tim Gallagher, editor of Cornell Lab of Ornithology's Living Bird magazine, went in search of a rare woodpecker and was lucky to make it back alive.

Our multimedia editor Flora Lichtman talked to Gallagher about it and has this story.

FLORA LICHTMAN, BYLINE: The imperial woodpecker is two feet tall. That's huge.

TIM GALLAGHER: As far as we've been able to determine from the fossil record, there's never been a bigger woodpecker.

LICHTMAN: Its closet relation is the ivory-billed woodpecker, and like its cousin, the imperial is critically endangered if not extinct. The last credible sightings were in the '90s. But Tim Gallagher thought there's a chance a few still may exist, which is what drew him to the remote mountain range in Mexico where the woodpecker lives.

GALLAGHER: The Sierra Madre's always been a rugged, ungovernable place.

LICHTMAN: And that's where the story turns.

(SOUNDBITE OF MUSIC)

LICHTMAN: An ordinary birding expedition this was not.

GALLAGHER: It's heavy drug-growing country, holding AK-47s. The guy was trembling and all white as a sheet. It just got crazier and crazier. It's like unbelievable.

LICHTMAN: That's basically how the story ends, but it really begins 50 years ago with the late William Rhein.

GALLAGHER: William Rhein was a dentist who lived in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, and he was also an amateur ornithologist. He was basically a bird fanatic. And he was really obsessed with the imperial woodpecker.

LICHTMAN: Tim Gallagher, by the way, is also really obsessed with the imperial woodpecker.

GALLAGHER: They're just so huge and powerful, swift-flying, and their crests. I just get real pleasure from seeing them.

LICHTMAN: Rhein must have felt similarly. Back in the '50s, he made several self-funded trips to the mountains of Mexico to look for this bird, and he's the only one known to have captured the bird on film. But for many years he kept the footage kind of under wraps.

GALLAGHER: The only opportunity he had to film this bird, he was o the back of a mule. So it was kind of jerky. So I think he was embarrassed by it, and he never really told many people about it.

LICHTMAN: Until an ornithologist by the name of Martjan Lammertink found a reference to the footage in some old letters and tracked Rhein down.

GALLAGHER: So he went there not knowing if this would be any good. He thought at best maybe there'll be an identifiable image of this bird, which will be nice.

LICHTMAN: When he got to the house, Rhein loads the reel on his 16-millimeter projector.

(SOUNDBITE OF FILM PROJECTOR)

WALTER RHEIN: We're all set to go. Cross your fingers. I haven't looked at this for years and years and years.

GALLAGHER: That was recorded - that's when Martjan first saw that film. He turned this tape recorder on when the guy was playing it, and...

RHEIN: And right here is where the - this is the (unintelligible) right here.

GALLAGHER: They started rolling this film, I mean it was incredible. I mean, this bird pitching up the tree.

RHEIN: Now this is back in the woods.

UNIDENTIFIED WOMAN: There it is, there it is. You see it?

RHEIN: There it is, yeah.

GALLAGHER: Chipping off chunks of bark, throwing pieces of bark away (unintelligible); it even takes off and flies three different times. And so in an 85-second film, it's just an incredible amount of stuff going on.

RHEIN: Well, I thought that was lousy, but I'd forgotten about those shots.

GALLAGHER: It was just such a tangible thing, something you could almost reach out and touch, you know. It was just like seeing a ghost.

(SOUNDBITE OF MUSIC)

GALLAGHER: Watching that movie in many ways inspired me. I just want to go there and save that bird.

LICHTMAN: And that's what they tried to do. Gallagher and the ornithologist Lammertink got together an expedition to go to the Sierra Madre Occidental, to the exact same spot where that footage was shot 50 years ago.

GALLAGHER: Martjan knew a forester in the city of Durango in Mexico, which is about a five-hour drive from where we were going to go in the mountains, and he was real familiar with that area. It's heavy drug-growing country, opium and marijuana, which we didn't fully realize when we first went up there.

Before we'd gone, a couple of months earlier, communicating with the forester, he'd said it's still pretty safe in this part of Mexico, so you should be OK. But when we finally got down there, he said, you know, there's really like a wave of violence starting to sweep through here.

And then - and actually, we had some pretty scary things happen right from the start.

LICHTMAN: Like for instance, the night before they were supposed to leave Durango.

GALLAGHER: We got a call from the forester, and he said he'd received an anonymous call from someone who knew exactly what we were doing and when we were going and was really furious about it. In fact, one of the Mexican scientists who was going to go with us, he dropped out of the expedition at that point.

And so suddenly it was, like, should we not go? Or what's happening?

(SOUNDBITE OF MUSIC)

GALLAGHER: You know, we were so close. It was like our excitement level was so high, I just, I knew if we left no one would go to check that area in our lifetimes. And I just thought we've got to go. And we decided we were going to go.

(SOUNDBITE OF MUSIC)

GALLAGHER: But we had our first bad encounter the next day as we were driving up there. This dark truck came up behind us and then came racing by, and all the guys in it were holding AK-47s, and they matched the description of some people who had murdered someone in another village about a week ago.

By the time we left, it felt more like the mountains of Afghanistan than Mexico, and you know, three houses were burned, and a man was abducted by - you know, from a little village, and all of the villagers had to put their money together to buy this guy back. And it's just insane.

You know, I mean, what are they going to do the next time someone gets grabbed?

LICHTMAN: How did you guys stay safe? What was your strategy?

GALLAGHER: We didn't really have a strategy. We just tried not to bother anyone and went with our business.

LICHTMAN: Which remember, started out, at least, as a mission to find a woodpecker. So that's what they tried to do. And one of their tricks was this.

(SOUNDBITE OF BIRD)

GALLAGHER: And we'd play these recordings of an ivory bill woodpecker because their voice is supposed to be just like an ivory bill. It sounds like a loud toot of a child's toy horn.

LICHTMAN: And they were hoping for a toot in return.

GALLAGHER: Rumors still do come out of there of, you know, lone imperial woodpeckers. But in all the places we went, we didn't get any response.

LICHTMAN: They never did spot the bird on that trip. Gallagher says logging has destroyed much of the imperial's habitat, and he heard from people who live there that 50 years ago there were extermination campaigns by loggers who thought the birds threatened the timber. Since then, new threats have emerged.

GALLAGHER: I'll tell you one of the worst moments for me. You know, we were warned against crossing this - the Rio Tuxacoringa(ph), and on the other side, the Setas control that, which is one of the worst drug cartels. And one day we're on the top of this cliff looking across the canyon, and there were people out there burning these old-growth trees, and they were going to destroy that forest so they could, you know, plant more opium poppies, and there was nothing we could do about it.

It wouldn't have mattered if there were imperial woodpeckers over there. I'm almost glad I didn't see one because it would have just made me sick. You wouldn't know what to do. The government, the Mexican government can't go up there. It's too dangerous, you know.

And I'm a real optimistic person about just about everything I do, and it just became so depressing. You know, at the end, we really did not know if we were going to get out of there. I even took the memory cards out of my cameras and my voice recorders and things, and I put them in my - the little hip pocket on my jeans just in case, you know, we got robbed or murdered. At least what I'd gotten would exist, you know.

(SOUNDBITE OF MUSIC)

LICHTMAN: What started out as a quest to save a bird became a trip about Gallagher's own survival.

GALLAGHER: Luckily, luckily we made it out of there, but then the next day we arranged to meet the forester in the city of Durango out in the park, and we were going to have breakfast together, and he walks up to us, and he's just - he's shaking like - and he just hugs us both tightly.

And he said, you know, if anything would have happened to you, I never would have forgiven myself. And he said that night before we drove out, he and his wife got down on their knees and, you know, prayed to God for our safety and everything.

By that time, we were all just standing in that park crying, you know, but it was awful.

(SOUNDBITE OF MUSIC)

GALLAGHER: Gallagher isn't planning to go back anytime soon, he says, but he didn't know that right away. After all, he'd spent years researching this bird. He'd made half-a-dozen trips to Mexico in the last two years.

It was hard to back away from it. I was really, really interested in the work, and I loved interviewing the people, and I think about the bird. It - it's just, it's too dangerous. You know, I've got kids at home that I need to raise.

(SOUNDBITE OF LAUGHTER)

LICHTMAN: Which for Gallagher may mean being haunted indefinitely by a ghost bird 3,000 miles away. For SCIENCE FRIDAY, I'm Flora Lichtman.

FLATOW: If you want to see the only documented footage of the Imperial Woodpecker, check out our video pick from a few weeks ago. It's on our website at sciencefriday.com.

Turkey suspends political and military ties with France

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced a raft of political and military sanctions on Thursday after French lawmakers approved a bill making it a crime to deny Armenian genocide.????????

Turkey will recall its ambassador from Paris and suspend mutual political visits as well as joint military projects, including joint exercises, Erdogan said.

"From now on we are revising our relations with France."

Most of the sanctions imposed on France, a NATO ally, will be in the military sphere.

Turkey will now decide on a case-by-case on every military demand made by EU member France to use Turkish airspace and military bases, Erdogan said, and will from now on reject any French demand for its military vessels to dock at Turkish ports.

Erdogan said Turkey would boycott a joint economic committee meeting in Paris in January and would not take part in twinning projects with France.

Charles and Ray Eames Explain the Computer Revolution [Video]

In the 1950's IBM was synonymous with computers but faced a serious problem. Computers at that time were enormous, vacuum tube-driven machines—completely alien technology to the average person—and that bred a fear of them. To counter this PR nightmare, IBM turned to none other than Charles and Ray Eames. More »

Turkish mosque collapse kills 1, injures 9 (AP)

ANKARA, Turkey ? The dome of a mosque under construction collapsed on Saturday, killing one worker and injuring nine others, who were pulled from the rubble by rescuers, an official said.

The dome of the mosque being built at an industrial area in the central Turkish town of Acigol tumbled down during construction, trapping 10 workers under a pile of iron, Mayor Hasan Unver told NTV television.

Nine of the workers were rescued with injuries while the other was pulled out dead, he said.

State-run TRT television showed images of rescuers, some carrying a bright orange stretcher, scrambling to rescue one trapped worker amid a pile of rubble and iron rods.

The images were a mini-replay of a series of televised rescues in October after a pair of powerful earthquakes buried hundreds of people in eastern Turkey.

The cause of Saturday's accident was under investigation.

Tough safety codes were approved a decade ago after earthquakes in western Turkey killed 18,000 people and prompted an outcry over the poor quality of construction, but enforcement has remained lax.

Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan charged that shoddy construction contributed to the high casualty toll of October's earthquakes and said Turkey had not learned lessons from past disasters.

The Car Repairs You Can (Seriously) Do Yourself, Despite Your Abilities [Video]

The Car Repairs You Can (Seriously) Do Yourself, Despite Your AbilitiesCar repairs can drain your pocketbook fast, but you can do a wide range of repairs yourself, regardless of your technical skill. We're not just talking oil changes; provided you can hold a wrench, you can fix everything ranging from fuel filters to alternators. We'll detail the tools necessary for your DIY toolkit, where to turn to for help when you're making the repairs, and how to tackle some of the most common car problems yourself.

Title image remixed from an original by Laralova (Shutterstock).

The biggest hurdle in convincing someone they can handle car repair is the fear factor, but here's the thing: It's actually pretty hard to permanently screw up a car. You might break something temporarily, or a fix might not work in the long run, but you probably won't set yourself or your car on fire just because you banged too hard on a valve. Cars are resilient machines and regardless of the year or make, there are plenty of repairs even the clumsiest and technically challenged can handle provided they have the confidence to push through.

The Free Tech That Will Help You on Your Way

The Car Repairs You Can (Seriously) Do Yourself, Despite Your AbilitiesFor a little background, I didn't own a car for about eight years, and before that, I had a small car I barely had the sense to put gas in, let alone repair anything on. Then, a couple years ago, I was handed down a small truck. Within the first couple weeks, a hose connection leading to the radiator cracked. I took a picture of the part that seemed to be leaking, walked into an auto parts store, showed it to them, and they found the replacement part for me. Twenty minutes later it was in and the truck was working again. Since then, I've helped friends with a wide range of repairs so I could learn more and practice.

For DIY repairs, your computer is your friend. AutoMD and Expert Village are both excellent resources of general purpose videos, how-to guides, and diagnostic assistance for the most common car problems. AutoMD also has an iPhone app with guides optimized for mobile viewing. If you need help deciding if a repair is worth your time, RepairPal is an excellent resource for checking the average cost of repairs in a shop and can help you decide if it's worth the time and effort to do it yourself.

As for the repair work, consider your phone, tablet, or computer the manual. Bring it out to the car with the video guide loaded up or the walkthrough in front of you. Watch and read over the directions several times so you feel comfortable, but keep your technology ready in case you need to reference a step. Take a picture of the section you're going to work on with your phone or a digital camera before you start so you know exactly how the engine is supposed to look if you get lost in the directions. If you feel like you need paper, you can always print directions or purchase your car's official guide.

For this guide, you can watch the videos embedded within or find step-by-step text instructions linked at the end of each section.

The Common Tools You Need and How to Shop for New Parts

Every car is different, but the myth foreign cars require special tools isn't exactly true. Nearly all cars use basic nuts and bolts for the most common repairs you need to make. Here's a short list of what you typically need:

  • Adjustable wrench
  • Torque wrench
  • Socket and ratchet set
  • Pliers
  • Phillips and flat head screwdrivers
  • Jack (usually included with your car)
  • There's no real secret to picking out tools, but they need to have a good grip. Buy tools with hefty handles.

You will also need to purchase new parts for your car if you're doing a replacement. If you purchase these from an auto parts store online, you will enter your car's year, make, and model into a form before searching for the part you need. If you're unsure of the technical name for a part, you can find the part number on the piece in your car, or you can head into a parts store for expert advice. Every car is slightly different, so make sure you enter the correct information to get the correct part and always hold onto your receipt in case it doesn't match up.

Replace a Broken or Worn Drive Belt

The Car Repairs You Can (Seriously) Do Yourself, Despite Your Abilities
How to know when to replace your drive belts: If your car squeals when you start it or when you use certain accessories, it might be a drive belt. You can quickly give the car a visual inspection and check the belts for cracks, wear, and looseness. Even if you're not hearing noises, if the belt is cracked or worn, it's best to replace it. If it's loose, you might need to tighten it up instead of replace it.

    Terms you need to know

  • Drive Belt: A drive belt is the rubber belt that connects and loops around pulleys on the your car's engine and is located at the front of the engine. These belts typically control accessories like the cooling system, battery charging, windshield wipers, and power steering. In older cars, you may find multiple belts for each system, but newer cars often use a belt called a serpentine belt, which is a single belt that loops through all of your car's systems. When working properly, you will not hear or notice the belt's existence, but if it's starting to fail, you will hear a loud squealing sound.
  • Serpentine Belt: The serpentine belt is the main drive belt in new vehicles. It wraps around several of your cars components instead of individual systems.
  • Pulleys: These are the small wheels with grooved rims the belt wraps around. When force is exerted, they spin, giving power to the systems they're attached to.
  • Tensioner pulley: A tensioner helps the pulleys work properly by allowing you to adjust the tightness of the belt in one place. Belts often stretch over use, so this keeps the system tight so belts don't fall off.
  • Tools you need: Ratchet, sockets, wrenches, screwdriver

How to replace a drive or serpentine belt yourself (step-by-step guide).

    Replace Your Battery and Alternator

The Car Repairs You Can (Seriously) Do Yourself, Despite Your Abilities

How to know your alternator or battery needs replacement: If your car isn't turning over and your accessories aren't powering on, two possible culprits are the battery and the alternator. You can test your alternator and your your battery with a multimeter to see if either are dead. If one of them isn't measuring enough power with the multimeter, you will need to replace it. If you have trouble locating your battery or alternator, your car's manual will include a chart with their location. If you left lights on overnight, your battery might just need a jump, so make sure you know how to jump a car. If your battery or alternator have failed, a jump start will often work to at least get you home.

    Terms you need to know

  • Alternator: The alternator is the device that works with your battery to generate power for the electrical parts of your vehicle. An alternator is almost always found near the front of the engine, with a belt connected to the front.
  • Battery: The battery is usually a large black box found near the front of a vehicle that supplies the initial power to the alternator. It is connected to your car with positive and negative terminals.
  • Multimeter: To test and replace a battery or alternator, you'll want a digital multimeter. A multimeter measures electrical properties like current and resistance. You'll use this to test your battery and your alternator to figure out which is causing the problems you're experiencing.
  • Accessories: Accessories refers to all your electronically powered parts in your car. These might include your stereo, power windows, power locks, or clock.
  • Tools you need: Wrenches, socket set, multimeter, screwdriver

Keep your battery in good shape: It's good to keep your battery clean to increase the battery life and cleaning isn't hard to do. You can clean your battery with baking soda, water, and little elbow grease to ensure the connection between the car and the battery is strong. It's not a bad idea to mix in cleaning your battery terminals to your yearly maintenance.

How to replace your battery (step-by-step guide).

How to replace your alternator (step-by-step guide).

    Replace Your Brake Pads

The Car Repairs You Can (Seriously) Do Yourself, Despite Your Abilities

How to know when your brake pads need replacing: If you hear a squeal when you apply the brakes, the pads need to be replaced. However, if you hear a grinding sound instead of a squeal, it usually means the rotor needs replacement. In the early stages of your car repairing life, you should probably take your brakes into a shop for service if you hear grinding. The brake pads, however, are an easy replacement you can do yourself.

    Terms you need to know

  • Brake pads: The brake pads are the part of your brakes that apply the frictional force to stop the car. These pads have a built-in warning system that squeals when the brakes are applied and the pad is worn down.
  • Rotor: The rotor is the main disc part of your brake system that the pads clamp onto. It's connected to the wheel and when the pads hit it, the car slows down. The pads are held on the rotor by calipers.
  • Calipers: The calipers are the part of your brakes that push the brake pads against the rotor, which causes the car to slow down. The calipers are usually located at the top of the rotor, like bicycle brakes.
  • Tools you need: jack, torque wrench and ratchets, tire iron, c-clamp

How to replace your brake pads (step-by-step guide).

    Fix Exterior Coolant Leaks

The Car Repairs You Can (Seriously) Do Yourself, Despite Your Abilities

How to know when to replace hoses and other parts: If after driving your car you notice a pool of green, orange, or yellow liquid on the ground when you park, you might have a leak. The liquid on the ground is antifreeze and if you're lucky, it's coming from a hole or crack in one of the exterior hoses. Right after you stop the car, pop open the hood and look for the same colored liquid draining from a hose or plastic piece, but be careful not to touch it because it will be hot. If you can see the leak, you can fix it yourself. All you need to do is unclamp the leaking hose, put on a new one, and then reinstall the clamp. It's about as complicated as attaching an accessory to a vacuum. If you cannot locate the leak, it might be inside the radiator. For this, you are best off taking your car into a shop until you have more experience.

    Terms you need to know

  • Radiator: The radiator is the large, air conditioner-looking part in front of the engine. When the engine gets hot, it's the radiator's job to keep the temperature down. To do this, it sends antifreeze through the hoses and to the engine. These hoses erode over time and eventually start to leak. When a hose is leaking, the engine isn't getting enough coolant and can overheat.
  • Water Pump: The water pump acts as the heart of your coolant system and pumps the antifreeze to and from the engine and the radiator. Like the radiator, it has hoses that can become brittle and cracked over time.
  • Hoses: While mostly self-explanatory, the hoses in the coolant system are what transfer the antifreeze between the radiator, engine, and water pump. These are made of rubber and often crack over time. They are usually attached with spring clamps or worm gears.
  • Tools you need: wrench, pliers

How to fix exterior coolant leaks (step-by-step guide).

The Regular Maintenance You Can Do in an Afternoon

The Car Repairs You Can (Seriously) Do Yourself, Despite Your Abilities

How to know when your car needs a tune-up: It's recommended you get a tune-up every 30,000 miles or every two years, whichever happens first. If you're close to either of those marks, it's a good idea to do some maintenance before taking a long road trip.

Nearly every facet of your regular maintenance, or tune-up, in car speak, is easy to do yourself. Each part of a tune-up is a separate procedure, so we've broken it down into individual sections that guide you through the process. With regular maintenance, your car will last longer and run better over time. We're not going to walk through each of these, but you'll find how-to guides by clicking the link on each section.

Terms and procedures you need to know to perform your own tune-up

  • Replace a Fuel Filter: The fuel filter does exactly what the name describes. It filters dust, particles, and anything that falls in your fuel line before it gets to the engine. Replacing your fuel filter can be a little terrifying since you're tapping into the gas line, but despite the inherent danger and caveat that you can't go around lighting fires while doing this job, it's usually a quick fix. Despite the name, the fuel filter often looks like a soda fountain cup with one or two straws sticking out of it.
  • Replace the Air Filter: The air filter is the part of the car that keeps dirt and particles from outside from getting into the engine when the engine sucks in air. It's incredibly important to your vehicles operation and a dirty filter can affect gas mileage and engine performance. There are few replacements on your car that are this simple. You need to unscrew a plastic lid, usually on the side of your engine, then take out the old filter, put the new one in, then screw the lid back on.
  • Check and Replace Spark Plugs and Wires: The spark plug is the part of your engine that ignites the gas and the air that cause combustion. When spark plugs fail, your gas mileage goes down, you may have trouble starting the car, a rough idle, or you might fail an emissions test.
  • Replace Distributor Cap and Rotor: The main job of the distributor cap is to distribute voltage from a coil to the correct cylinder. It essentially makes it possible for ignition to happen, which ensures the car starts. It's an easy replacement you'll do alongside replacing the spark plugs.
  • Oil Change: You have likely heard that you need to change your oil every 3,000-7,000 miles, but it's also good to do it when you do your tune-up. Not changing your oil can lead to contamination and will begin to affect your engine's performance. The problem is that it's often hard to properly dispose of the oil, so check online to make sure you have a disposal area near you, otherwise it may be cheaper to do it at a shop.
  • How to perform a basic engine tune-up (step-by-step guide).

Tools you need: ratchet and socket set, screwdrivers, torque wrench, spark plug gap tool, spark plug socket

Once You're Comfortable Under the Hood the Possibilities Are Endless

Once you're comfortable fixing minor car problems and doing your regular maintenance, you're likely going to want to try more complicated repairs. With the exception of major engine work, you can do many repairs from the comfort of your own garage or street. Diagnosing the problem is the hardest part of more difficult repairs, but Car Trouble make the diagnosing process a little easier. If your problem is a Check Engine light, remember that most auto parts shops will test your car for free.

For the repairs, using a website like AutoMD will give you a difficulty estimation to help you decide if you can handle it. The difficulty bar is based on the amount of time it takes, the location of the replacement or repair you need to make, and the tools needed to make the repairs.

Every car is going to have quirks and there will inevitably be a few things you can't figure out or can't get to. The main point to remember is that car repairs are not as difficult as they look and it's pretty hard to screw things up. Even newer cars with more electronics have parts that can be repaired in your driveway and it's just a matter of trusting yourself to do it. Getting over your fear of car repair is similar to teaching yourself Photoshop in a lot of ways, and fixing your car is more willpower than anything else.
