Researchers identify mechanism that makes breast cancer invasive

Thursday, March 29, 2012

A new study has identified a key mechanism that causes breast cancer to spread. The research, published by Cell Press on March 30th in the journal Molecular Cell, enhances our knowledge about the signals that drive cancer metastasis and identifies new therapeutic targets for a lethal form of invasive breast cancer that is notoriously resistant to treatment.

Amplification of the gene for ErbB2 has been linked with aggressive forms of breast cancer and is associated with a poor outcome. Although ErbB2-positive breast cancers are routinely treated with chemotherapy and the ErbB2-targeted drug trastuzumab (Herceptin), this treatment often fails. "Nearly half of breast cancers with high ErbB2 expression are either initially non-responsive or eventually develop resistance to trastuzumab," explains senior study author, Dr. Tuula Kallunki, from the Danish Cancer Society Research Center. "Therefore, a better understanding of the molecular basis of ErbB2-induced malignancy is critical for further development of targeted treatments."

In the current study, Dr. Kallunki and colleagues discovered that ErbB2 induces expression of proteins called cathepsins. Previous work has linked cathepsins with metastasis of pancreatic cancer, specifically with tumor cell invasion of surrounding tissues and with the establishment of tumor blood supply. Using a three-dimensional model system to study ErbB2-induced cellular invasion, the researchers demonstrated that inhibition of cathepsins prevented ErbB2-driven breast cancer invasion. They went on to identify components of the complex signaling network linking ErbB2 and cathepsin expression with cancer invasiveness.

Taken together, the results demonstrate that the invasive behavior of ErbB2-positive cancer cells is dependent on cathepsin activity and uncover a molecular link between ErbB2 and breast cancer invasion. "Our work has introduced a cellular model system to study ErbB2-induced invasion and identified an invasion-promoting signaling network," concludes Dr. Kallunki. "In addition, our findings provide several potential therapeutic targets against ErbB2-driven invasive cancers."

2013 Ford Mustang

See What the
Rest of the Web Says
We've gathered reviews from Edmunds.com, Cars.com plus live Tweets on this car. See What We Found ?

The Basics:

The Ford Mustang sure might look and sound much like the pony cars of the past, but it definitely lives in the present. Just like the Chevy Camaro and Dodge Challenger, the current Mustang isn't just a one-hit wonder, capable of packing huge V-8s for quarter-mile sprints. That's still part of it, for sure, but handling is now also part of their core set--as is the sort of true sports-car finesse that you might have never expected.

While the Mustang still does have a live-axle layout in back, it's surprising that it handles just as well as some other vehicles with more sophisticated origins. And V-6 models are no longer the compromise they once were. Entry-level buyers get a 305-horsepower V-6 that can turn in 0-60 mph times of about 6.0 seconds, plus fuel economy of up to 31 mpg on the highway when teamed with the six-speed automatic--which for 2013 gets SelectShift manual control.

The V-8 catapults the Mustang into a whole other performance category. The 5.0-liter V-8 thumps out 420 horsepower (up from 412), and the exhaust calls it out to the world with a richer, almost exotic note. The Mustang's electric power steering, which gets a multi-mode setting for steering boost for 2013, is precise if not always well-weighted, and overall the Mustang is far more fun to drive on a curvy road than models of the not-so-distant past. The race-ready Boss 302 gives you what you need for the track--including a higher-output, 444-hp V-8.?

The 2013 model year brings some more modern details to the Mustang's classic look. The entire lineup gets HID headlamps, with two strips of LED lighting flanking them, and LED lamps used in back, with a dark-tinted look. The front grille has been amped up a bit, while the lower airdams are neater and thinner. And a clever new night-lighting option, called the pony projection light, beams a pony emblem on the ground next to the doors.

The Mustang's cockpit has the upright dash and big, beautiful gauges with color-shifting lighting and metallic trim, a good blend of Sixties style and today's touchscreen sensibilities. There's no MyFord Touch yet, but new for 2013 is a Track Apps feature that lets you time your own acceleration or quarter-mile times.

Coupe and Convertible editions can be had with either powertrain. Coupes are the way to best enjoy the Mustang's dynamics, with the glass panoramic roof, but the Convertible is still one of the best drop-top picks if you need a back seat.

Parking sensors, dual-zone climate control, and HD Radio are all items that are now offered in the Mustang. But the real allure is in customization and performance options. Of course, you can customize the 'Stang with all the hood scoops, paint schemes and decal packages you need to fondly remember those glory days. And for 2013 we're intrigued by the GT Track Package that?s new and only offered on manual GT Mustangs. It includes a 3.73 axle, an upgraded radiator, performance brake pads, and the Boss 302?s Torsen differential?in addition to the larger front discs, 19-inch alloy wheels, and summer performance tires that are already a part of the Brembo Brake Package.

?

Ex-NFL Player Mitchell Charged With Tax Fraud

Published: Thursday, March 22, 2012 at 11:43 p.m.
Last Modified: Thursday, March 22, 2012 at 11:43 p.m.

ORLANDO | Former professional football player and Lakeland native Freddie L. Mitchell II has been indicted on tax fraud charges and was arraigned Thursday.

Mitchell, 33, and two others, Jamie Russ-Walls and Richard Walls, are accused by the Internal Revenue Service of submitting fraudulent tax returns to obtain refunds ranging from $170,000 to nearly $2 million, according to the indictment filed in U.S. District Court in Orlando.

Mitchell played in the NFL for four seasons, from 2001 to 2004, for the Philadelphia Eagles.

Russ-Walls and Walls are accused of recruiting Mitchell to lure professional athletes into the scheme. The indictment states that ?Mitchell used his football sources to recruit a professional athlete listed in the indictment as "A.G." The athlete's full name is not revealed.

The athlete paid the group $100,000 to prepare his taxes in 2008. Russ-Walls and Walls prepared the returns and submitted false information, including falsified W-2 forms and Schedule C forms showing a profit or loss from a business, the indictment said.

They claimed a refund of $1.968 million without the consent of A.G., who thought the tax refund was for about $1.2 million, the indictment says.

The group gave $1,050,000 of the refund to A.G. Another $638,288 went into an account controlled by Jamie Russ-Walls and Mitchell received $280,000, according to the indictment.

The group also prepared five other false returns, with refunds totaling more than $2.2 million, the indictment says.

During an arraignment Thursday in Orlando, all three pleaded not guilty.

Mitchell, a Kathleen High School graduate, played for UCLA before joining the NFL. He was a wide receiver for the Eagles and played in one Super Bowl.

He was known for being outspoken off the field. He went by the nicknames "Fred Ex" and the "People's Champ."

Since retiring from the NFL, he has run into legal and financial hurdles. A business arrangement to buy Brothers Bar-B-Q in Lakeland fell apart in September 2009.

That same year, he was briefly handcuffed by Lakeland police after FedEx delivered a package to his grandmother's home containing marijuana. It was then delivered to Brothers Bar-B-Q.

Mitchell said he had no idea what the package contained and said when he went to sign for it, he found himself surrounded by police.

Police never formally charged Mitchell with anything.

Last week, he was arrested in Orlando on an arrest warrant from South Bend, Ind., alleging nonpayment of child support.

He bailed out of the Orange County Jail on Thursday night, according to jail records.

Getting Legal Assistance To Fight A Traffic Violation Charge ...

?

By Keith Pollow

To make roads safer, traffic tickets are given to drivers who break traffic laws. Traffic laws broken can include speeding, impaired driving, illegal parking, etc. The traffic ticket will note the date to go to court to plead guilty or not guilty. For people who have been given a traffic ticket, there are occasions when it could be useful to fight the ticket.

There are numerous reasons why you may choose to fight a traffic ticket that include: Police officer could not show up for the hearing and the case gets dismissed, you may be able to get the penalty reduced, you might wish to try to stop demerit points from being added to your driver?s license, and you believe the police officer made a mistake and you can prove it such as a faulty speed measuring machine. In such cases, it?s wise to hire a lawyer that specializes in traffic violation cases.

The legal services you choose should have experience with traffic cases. A lawyer that focuses on this area of the law will in all probability be skilled, competent, and an expert in traffic laws. A lawyer with inadequate experience will greatly reduce the probabilities of a successful outcome. The criminal lawyer you choose must be local such as speeding tickets legal services because it means they know the laws, the legal system in your area, and even the all of the court officials. Whether it is a speeding ticket or a charge of impaired driving, it?s always a good idea to inquire about the fees of attorneys specializing in traffic law cases. However, simply because you choose a legal service with the lowest fee, it doesn?t imply they?re ineffective. It?s better to have quality traffic violation lawyer rather than an unqualified expensive lawyer.

Searching online is a good way to locate legal services focusing on traffic violations such as criminal lawyer services. Their websites will detail their services, years of experience, schooling, success stories, etc. It?s a quick and easy way to seek out law firms such as traffic tickets services focusing on traffic laws. Lawyers that specialize in traffic tickets and other charges such as impaired driving understand how the system works and can evaluate your case to see if you can beat the ticket or charge. They can look at the events surrounding the ticket or charge to determine if there are any issues that will provide a good defence. They also advise clients on how best to proceed.

Getting a traffic ticket can be an actual frustration. With a traffic ticket, you presumably can receive a heavy fine, demerit points applied to your driving history, an increase in auto insurance rates, lose your driver license, and even go to jail. It might be to your advantage to fight a traffic ticket to avoid such unfavorable consequences. If you do choose to fight the ticket, it is very important have a legal service that focuses on traffic ticket circumstances as it is going to improve the chance of a beneficial outcome.

Getting a speeding ticket on your driving record can have serious consequences. Find the right Toronto criminal lawyer and former police officers to help fight these tickets. X-Copper. Traffic tickets Mississauga

The Return of the Supersonic Biplane

In retrospect, the Concorde was doomed from the start. Besides being fuel-hungry, the legendary supersonic jet created sonic booms that were simply too loud for comfort, which prevented the aircraft from flying lucrative overland routes, such as New York to Los Angeles, and kept it an expensive luxury.

More than a decade after Concorde was retired, researchers are investigating new ways to build supersonic aircraft by going back to an old idea: the biplane. New research, most recently from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, shows promise for solving both major challenges to supersonic transports?cost and noise?by turning to this configuration long abandoned by aircraft designers.

Ahead of Its Time

Back in 1935, German aeronautical engineer Adolf Busemann proposed a radical solution to a problem that did not yet exist. In that era, airplane builders foresaw that biplanes would soon be replaced by single-wing aircraft. But without access to modern computational tools, Busemann attacked the theoretical problem of supersonic flight and showed that biplanes could actually exceed the speed of sound without creating the hefty shock waves (and resulting sonic booms) that jets such as the Concorde would encounter, and with a minimum of drag. In Busemann?s biplane design, the noise-producing shock waves would not propagate outward from the front and rear of the craft, but rather from between the two sets of stacked wings, canceling each other out.

There was one major catch (besides the fact that it wasn?t actually possible to build the plane with 1935 technology): Busemann?s biplane design would work only at a set design speed, say Mach 1.7, and then only if the proposed craft first accelerated to a much higher speed, Mach 2.18, before dropping back to reduced-drag flight at Mach 1.7. Getting up to that much higher speed would be dicey and perhaps impossible, given the extreme drag encountered on the way.

And so, Busemann?s biplane concept remained a historical curiosity for 70 years. Then, beginning in 2004, researchers led by Kazuhiro Kusunose at Tohoku University in Japan applied modern computational fluid dynamics to the venerable design. By 2010, the group found that by varying the shape of the four sets of wings in flight via moveable flaps and slats, they could get a theoretical airplane to fly with acceptable drag through all phases of flight, from takeoff to landing.

Meanwhile, at MIT...

When Rui Hu was a Ph.D. student at Stanford University, her adviser, Antony Jameson, introduced her to the Tohoku work. Hu saw it as an inelegant solution. "For supersonic flight, if you need to operate these moving parts, it will increase the possibility for instability," she tells PM. Coming to grips with the limitations of Busemann?s biplane became the focus of her Ph.D. thesis. She continued her work on the subject as a postdoc at MIT, where she was further aided in her quest for a better supersonic biplane by Qiqi Wang.

The result of the trio?s work, laid out in a paper to be published in the Journal of Aircraft, is a biplane airfoil design that should enable smooth flight to supersonic cruising speed with minimal drag, and without having to first accelerate beyond the optimal design speed. The team reached its final design by running computer models of about 700 airfoil configurations and a dozen possible supersonic cruise speeds.

"We really want to make Concord-like flight feasible in the future," Wang tells PM. "If the drag problem is reduced, that will reduce the cost of fuel and reduce the ticket price for supersonic transport. If we can reduce the sonic boom of the airplane by a large factor, then there is a possibility that this airplane is going to be allowed to fly supersonically over land."

The optimized Busemann biplane design could overcome both barriers to supersonic passenger flight. But don?t start saving up for supersonic tickets just yet. While the Japanese researchers have modeled their designs in three dimensions, the MIT group is still working with easier-to-calculate 2D computer models. "If we can do this in three dimensions, it will become very interesting," Hu says. "[But] how we design a real airfoil and airplane, I have to say, we don?t know."

Real Talk: 6 Signs Your Partners Scared Of Commitment

Real Talk: 6 Signs Your Partners Scared Of Commitment

6 Signs Your Partners Scared Of Commitment

Many of us will have encountered meeting that special person who can?t seem to commit. I recollect an associate of mine, in his late forties who expressed a desire to get married but?couldn't?commit within his relationships. Does this sound familiar? While society portrays it?s mainly men that are commitment phobes, women struggle with this issue to. Ironically the person who fears a committed relationship is the one who craves it the most. Below are a few signs that indicate the person you?re dating is scared of taking the relationship to the next level.?

1. This person wants a relationship but also wants freedom and space. They're usually attracted to long distance relationships and busy independent types. The book 'He's Just Not That showed an example of a young woman that dated a guy that?wouldn't?make time for her. He led a busy lifestyle and would often squeeze her in-between work and meetings. Be wary of a person that wants 100% commitment from you but can?t give the same in return. This will only lead to frustration and resentment. 2. They don't tell anyone about you. I know you don't have to profess your relationship status to the world immediately, but there comes a point when you?re nearest and dearest should know. Some people are simply private while others want to portray that there single and ready to mingle. When you?re truly happy and secure within a new relationship you can't help but tell your best friend, a family member, somebody?anybody. If after a few months he/she hasn't told at least one?person?about you, be concerned. This could indicate that they don't want anyone to know you exist as they?re not sure of their feelings, they?re scared or simply keeping their options open. 3. They avoid going out with you and your friends. Your friends and family will offer up thoughts about your new beau with or without your consent. They?ll also be able to see red flags that you can?t due to the love goggles. If a person doesn?t want to commit, they won?t get too involved in your world i.e. hang out with friends, getting to know your hobbies and interests, etc. Doing so will indicate some form of attachment. Attachment doesn?t bode too well with commitment phobes. ?Meeting family often forces a person into addressing how they really feel. There?ll always be that aunt/ father asking so what are your intentions? Cue awkward silence?.. 4. Vague about their feelings. Some folks find it difficult problem conveying their feelings and come across vague and disconnected. If they can't acknowledge?how they feel through words I?d like to think their actions will speak volumes. If you?re not seeing any concrete signs of progression then maybe they just don?t care enough about you. You know within yourself when something feels a bit off. Even if you?re not ready for children, marriage or living together you should know whether you want this person in your life and whether you can be there for them wholeheartedly not when it suits you. 5. They wont allow the relationship to go and don't have any intentions of doing so. I consider this as having your cake and eating it. In other words it?s selfish, because you?re constantly putting your needs before your partners. You can?t commit to the relationship but won?t let the other person go. If you know you can?t give your other half what they want why string them along and let them fall deeper in love with you? Be wary of this as it?s all a form of control. I?ve had friends say they were optimistic and felt they could give more of themselves to the person when in reality they couldn?t. Yet they had no intention of getting out of the relationship. No one wants to be alone but its better for both parties if you just be honest. 6. They hate planning ahead because that means commitment. There was a time when I dated a guy that would not commit to any plans. The simplest proposals of going to the cinema or dinner were always greeted with I?ll let you know. Huh?!?! A simple yes or no would have suited me fine at least that way I would have known where I stood. These were all excuses he?d use because he didn?t want to go out with me. Do not be fooled by inconsistent behaviour and don?t make excuses for it. If the person you?re with constantly blows hot and cold and has you questioning whether you?re dating two different people I suggest you reflect on what?s keeping you there in the first place. These aren't definitive guidelines but points to be aware of. Some men/ women will display bad behaviour so that you have no choice but to leave. The end result?no commitment! Then you?re left with the guilt of ending the relationship. Take the time to get to know a person, LISTEN to the words they use on a daily basis. If you choose to continue a relationship with someone who displays non?committal?behaviour it?s at your own risk. You?ll eventually get to a point where the good memories are replaced with bitterness.

Interactive Web Design Blog ? Blog Archive ? Really Simple ...

RSS ? or what exactly is now called ?Really Simple Syndication? ? is really a file format that?s incorporated by Internet surfers in their websites to match ?web syndication?, making their web content available in a format that may be universally understood by people.

In essence, RSS is a ?mini database? that contains headlines and descriptions (a synopsis or a line or a couple of the full article) of your respective web content, including hyperlinks that enable users to link time for the full article of their choice.

RSS websites ? which is, websites which contain RSS ?feeds? (articles or postings) ? routinely have colorful graphics to indicate to users the specific content is available through Nourishes. These graphics are usually depicted by orange rectangles which are usually marked with ?RSS? or ?XML?.

With its increased popularity, RSS is now being adopted and utilised by more webmasters or publishers. Today, numerous resources have become available that aid Internet surfers (and even beginners at the same time) on how to build and use RSS.

Setting up RSS feeds and adding these to your website could be a simple process that does not involve considerable time or hardly any money. Listed below are some simple and easy basic steps that you might want to follow:

1. Have your web content and/or news in a RSS feed format, such as XML (appropriate and ?ready-made? feeds are also available from other sources).

2. Select the orange graphic ? this is actually the RSS feed icon. Observe the URL of the Feed; this will be displayed inside the address bar (for Traveler).

3. Input the feed URL on the RSS feed creation program.

4. Go through the ?Generate Feed? button. This can generate the RSS code on your web content.

5. Go into the RSS code within the appropriate put on your own website.

Having created an Feed for your website, next comes the work of publishing your online content and news and achieving them shown on other sites and headline viewers. This can be made possible with the aid of RSS readers or aggregators.

RSS readers or news aggregators are utilized to view particular web contents. RSS readers offer the collection of ?feeds? or RSS files from content providers, plus they are generally classified into 3 types:

- Desktop RSS readers ? also known as standalone desktop application, they normally ?run? in the background and they are similar to an e-mail client, collecting the feeds and refreshing items automatically because they are updated.

- Web-based aggregators ? these are generally online services which allow users to personalize webpages, refreshing them whenever the page is accessed or whenever a person logs into the service.

- Plug-in aggregators/readers ? these utilize either browsers or e-mail clients, which permit users to see RSS feeds while within the existing program.

Using an RSS-enabled website provides Web users (especially those who?re website owners) using the following benefits:

- Allows users to generate up-to-date news and postings, as information and content inside RSS readers or aggregators are automatically updated whenever the RSS feed is ?refreshed?.

- Allows users to get control over the information that they need to view or receive, as they can remove an rss feed of their choosing any time they want to.

Besides these benefits, RSS websites are also useful for those who conduct their business online, particularly in Internet or Website marketing. RSS can be an effective marketing tool for your website, particularly in the following fields:

- E-mail marketing and publishing
- Internet marketing and optimization
- Business blogging
- Advertising on the internet
- Digital advertising
- Branding and e-commerce

In addition, RSS can ?power? your website, providing you with the subsequent:

- Valuable, updated, and relevant helpful site visitors and potential clients ? RSS is ideal for websites which contain (and syndicate) too much info online that has to be changed or updated regularly.

- Seo for the website.

- More visitors for the website ? your internet site can ?harvest? and display information from other sites, driving more traffic to your own website.

- A wide selection of ?channels? for content distribution, for example PDA?s, cellular phones, voice mails, and email ticklers.

- A dependable way to have internet content shipped to Internet users and prospective clients ? RSS means that your site is viewed by the people who are enthusiastic about them, without having them blocked and ?cleaned? by ISPs or Spam filters.

These are simply some of the advantages that RSS can give your website (as well as your business). The options are endless, as increasing numbers of comes up almost everyday. Do not be left behind ? take the advantage of the marketing and publishing power of RSS. .

Malik Yusef: Peace Is the Gift We Give Ourselves

On the anniversary of my man Biggie's transformation (R.I.P Notorious B.I.G), "South by Southwest" kicked off its 26th yearly festival, executing its agenda perfectly. Celebrities of all walks of life marched with no name too big, nor color code unheard from. The melting pot of music, film and interactive conferencing was ripe and in full speed. Right upon my arrival, I realized that in some ways we have all been to the Promised Land. What we need is to better understand it, and properly care for it at the same time.

The turn-out was amazing! Timberland appeared at Perez Hilton's spot, Theophilus London performed at Rachel Ray's BBQ, 50 Cent rocked at Austin Music Hall, the Boss (Bruce Springsteen), Eminem, Jay-Z, and even my family Kanye West came through on this real G.O.O.D music thing. The racial roadblocks at every level were dismantled and rendered non-important. What I saw was three generations of humanity which once could not drink from the same water fountain, now living the theory of "one mic." My "vision was set" (as my man DJ 3rd Eye would say) on the young men and women from the inner cities who were now living their dreams by going from what was once a lack of resources directly into co-operative economics. The day-to-day grind and tense faces that normally wore "ill grills," were now painted with Mona Lisa smiles. For the first time, I can honestly say that outside of the family I saw people who I'd want to work with.

Having seen the "gerbil wheel" effect that big corporate radio has laid out on our artistry, by playing the same songs over and over, SXSW put on what I would call a real musical rotation. The independent media and bloggers took full advantage of SXSW having brought so much talent in one place by providing a voice for a new generation of hip hop artists allowing them to take their rightful place in the industry. They had gotten beyond exchanging information on their fashions and what they were wearing, while lyrically taking freedom beyond the same old verbal slavery. Information is power, and I can honestly say that I saw it being shared amongst the masses at SXSW.

There was a super increase in corporate sponsorship. Big business laid out their brands by the hundreds. Yet, in all these different structures, there was peace. Every talent and participant that came through extended this enjoyable peace. It was afforded to us by our music and given to us by ourselves. This kind of peace can only be effective when we are balanced in our dealings with each other. SXSW set the scales just right! Next year, I plan on bringing all of our movements to the table including "Bridge 1018" and What is Beautiful Never Dies. Consider the G.O.O.D. music family tickets already bought. As the saying goes, 'No Justice, No beats, SXSW kept the peace!' One love. Shout outs to MC Hammer and the band Zzaje; music + movement= money !

Nats send Harper to Triple-A

Nationals manager Davey Johnson told reporters at the start of spring training that he was open to the idea of Bryce Harper earning a spot on the Opening Day roster. But it was a longshot from the start, and any hope of it happening has now been crushed.

According to Mark Zuckerman of CSN Washington?s Nats Insider, Harper has been optioned to Triple-A Syracuse, where he will begin the 2012 regular season and play primarily in center field.

Harper went 8-for-28 with zero homers, two walks and 11 strikeouts this spring in the Grapefruit League. A calf injury cost him over a week of playing time.

The 19-year-old phenom should debut for the Nationals by the middle of this summer, and could be up as early as June if he gets off to a hot start in April and May in the Triple-A International League.

Villain in Disguise: Jupiter's Role in Impacts on Earth

Whilst most famous for his catalog of 110 galaxies, nebulae, clusters and double stars, Charles Messier was a comet-hunter at heart. His catalog was simply a list of nuisances, faint fuzzies that looked like comets but were not. The Frenchman found 13 comets in all between 1760 and 1785, but perhaps the most important of them was the streaking comet that he spotted in June 1770. Fast moving on the sky, it was bright enough at magnitude +2 that it could be clearly seen from well-lit towns and cities. A brief spectacle of wonder for eighteenth century astronomers to enjoy, its ramifications could have been much greater.

The comet has since become known as Lexell's Comet, after the Russian (yet Swedish born) astronomer Anders Johan Lexell who first calculated its orbit. He showed that the comet had made a close approach of just 2.2 million kilometers (0.015 AU), which is about six times the distance to the moon. It was the closest a comet has ever been witnessed to approach the Earth and, in astronomical terms, a very near (and fortunate) miss.

Lexell found that the comet swooped around the sun with an orbital period of just under six years, but its next return in 1776 would see it on the far side of the sun, out of harm's way. Sure enough, no astronomers found it again that year. In 1782 however, when again it was predicted to be visible, the comet was nowhere in sight.

The French mathematician Pierre Simon-Laplace calculated that the comet had experienced a set of encounters with the giant planet Jupiter. The first saw Jupiter's gravity modify the comet's orbit to fling it almost onto a direct collision course with Earth. The second encounter modified the comet's orbit, ejecting it from the solar system altogether and removing it as a potential hazard.

Lexell is now a lost comet and Jupiter is the reason why nobody had ever seen it before 1770, and why no one ever saw it afterwards. In doing so, Jupiter played the role of both Earth's friend and Earth's foe. [Best Close Encounters of the Comet Kind]

The story of Lexell's Comet was pretty much forgotten in the decades and centuries that followed. By the 1960s astronomers looked upon long period comets ? comets that hail from the Oort Cloud at the very edge of our solar system and which take many millennia to orbit the sun ? as the major impact hazard to Earth. A general idea developed, bolstered by computer simulations performed in 1994 by the late George Wetherill of the Carnegie Institution, that dictated how Jupiter acted as Earth's protector, sweeping up or ejecting many of the long period comets from the solar system and removing them from the population of potential impactors (Wetherill's simulations coincided with comet Shoemaker?Levy 9 colliding with Jupiter). This idea has taken hold in established theory yet few have ever really questioned it until now.

Realizing that today we know of many more short period comets and near-Earth asteroids that cross our planet's orbit than long period comets, Jonathan Horner of the University of New South Wales, Sydney and Barrie Jones of the UK's Open University have run new simulations that reveal a very different picture, one that has important consequences for the habitability of Earth and planets in general.

"When George Wetherill did his work back in 1994, the computers available to him were much more limited than what we have today," says Horner, who originally comes from the U.K. "The lack of computing power meant that he had to make some fairly big approximations and simplifications. His was a ground-breaking study but at the same time it was one that was limited by what he had available."

Horner and Jones decided to run the experiment again but this time with twenty-first century computing power, hooking up tens of computers in parallel at the Open University. Their simulations agreed that Jupiter is a factor in protecting Earth from long period comets, but how would it fare with the new populations of short period comets and near Earth asteroids? Described in a series of papers published in the International Journal of Astrobiology, the duo found their answer to be at odds with conventional theory.

Gravitational resonances

Movies such as Armageddon and Deep Impact, combined with the common consensus that an asteroid strike 65 million years ago finished off the reign of the dinosaurs, has meant that the notion of asteroids hitting Earth is now part of our pop culture. These objects hail from the Asteroid Belt between Mars and Jupiter.

While most asteroids move on stable orbits around the sun, neighboring Jupiter's influence looms large and gravitational resonances between the planet and regions of the Asteroid Belt are adept at clearing out any rogue asteroids in these regions and sending them hurtling in-system. Often these rogues can originate from collisions between asteroids that send a shower of rocky chunks spinning off into these resonant zones.

"The main thing that is driving material from the Asteroid Belt into the inner solar system is the influence of something called a secular resonance," says Horner. "As things stand now in our solar system, this particular secular resonance is right at the inner edge of the asteroid belt."

In their simulations Horner and Jones played about with the mass of Jupiter, finding that the lower the planet's mass, the broader the secular resonance becomes and the more it moves into the main body of the Asteroid Belt, closer to Jupiter, leading to more asteroids being perturbed. The simulations showed that the number of asteroid impacts on Earth peaks when there is a planet in Jupiter's orbit that has a mass one-fifth that of Jupiter's mass, whereas just over half the peak rate of impacts occur when there is a planet with a mass equal to Jupiter. The impact rate falls off again at the lower extreme, when Jupiter's mass becomes too low to be able to nudge any asteroids with its gravity.

A similar result, albeit for different reasons, arises when considering the impact rate of short period comets on Earth. Currently, Jupiter's gravity is capable of throwing comets close to the Earth, as we saw with Lexell's Comet, but it is also equally adept at cleaning up its mess and removing dangerous comets from the solar system. Were Jupiter only to have one-fifth of its real mass, the balance between hurling comets towards us and then removing them would be lost; Jupiter would still be able to destabilize comets and send them our way, but it would lose the ability to remove many of them.

"If you have a low mass Jupiter, it is capable of placing things on Earth-crossing orbits but because it doesn't have a big gravitational reach, once it has put a comet on an Earth-crossing orbit the comet can remain in that orbit for a very long time before it encounters Jupiter again," says Horner.

Better the devil you know?

Jupiter's role seems confused. It definitely sends asteroids and comets our way and, in any given year, more than 90 percent of all objects crossing Earth's orbit are asteroids, so the protection Jupiter provides us from long period comets, or by eventually removing short period comets, is of lesser importance. Hence Jupiter is not the friend that it has been perceived to be. However, things could be far worse: were Jupiter to have a mere 20 percent of its mass, the impact rate would skyrocket. Obviously for any denizens on a planet in the target zone this is bad news, but in the grand scheme of things are impacts a positive or negative factor on the overall evolution of life on a planet across billions of years? When searching for potentially habitable exoplanets, should we seek to avoid systems that contain a 0.2 Jupiter-mass gas giant at a similar distance to Jupiter from the sun?

Whether impacts have been a good thing or a bad thing for the evolution of life on Earth depends on who you talk to, says Dave Waltham, Head of the Earth Sciences Department at Royal Holloway, University of London. "What you can definitely say is that they cause some mass extinctions. Lots of people argue, however, that impacts can be good because they stir thing up and stop the biosphere from becoming stuck in a rut. Certainly for human beings, we wouldn't be here if the dinosaurs hadn't been wiped out."

Impacts may only be healthy in the long run if they are not so frequent as to not give the biosphere chance to recover. Evidence in Earth's geological record suggests that it takes around ten million years following a big impact for the planet to heal, so an impact rate of one large collision every hundred million years or so, as Earth experiences, allows plenty of time between crashes for life to flourish. On the other hand if that impact rate was every few million years, the bombardment would pulverize our planet into a lifeless husk with little opportunity to develop a new biosphere.

Horner and Jones' simulations are now beginning to feed into discussions regarding habitability on planets around other stars. "In Peter Ward and Donald Brownlee's book Rare Earth, they set Jupiter up as a shield, but they didn't really demonstrate it," says Waltham, a self-confessed 'Rare Earther'. "Jonti (Jonathan Horner) and Barrie went out and tested that idea and in doing so removed one of the barriers to habitability."

Too much water?

Impacts have an additional benefit: they bring water to otherwise dry worlds. Our current understanding of how planets form is that Earth was born dry ? temperatures were so hot that its surface was molten and any resident water was driven off. So why do we now live on a world that is replete in watery oceans?

The idea is that the water was brought here by objects that crashed into Earth, which were either asteroids or comets (the current consensus is leaning towards asteroids, based upon the discovery that the isotopes of hydrogen in Earth's water do not match the isotopes of hydrogen seen in comets). One can imagine that in an environment with too few impacts Earth would have remained as dry as the moon, and so a perturbing body like Jupiter might therefore be needed to ensure there is water present for life. On the flip-side, too many impacts could easily bring too much water.

"Earth's water is ample and there is a lot more than we would expect given where Earth formed, but you could imagine a scenario where you have a hundred or a thousand times more water and there is no solid land," says Horner.

The prospects for habitability on water worlds may be surprisingly dire, adds Waltham. "Having too much water could be a problem because Earth's climate system is, to a considerable extent, controlled by the fact that we have a mix of land and sea," he says, referring to the carbon-silicate cycle, the process by which carbon and hence global warming and atmospheric temperatures are regulated. Volcanoes spew carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, which helps warm the planet, and when the climate grows too warm rain levels increase and the carbon dioxide is washed out in a slightly acidic precipitation that weathers rocks on the surface, creating calcium carbonate, bicarbonate and silica that runs-off into the oceans. Here it becomes incorporated into sea-dwelling micro-organisms that die and carry the carbon down to the sea floor, where it enters subduction zones and is eventually recycled and spewed out once more from volcanoes. Without land, the silicate weathering cannot take place, causing a fatal break in the chain.

Whereas Waltham believes Earth-like planets are rare, Horner is more the optimist and recognizes that his work with Barrie Jones has removed one of the obstacles to long-term habitability and may help act as a pointer in where to search for life in the Universe. "We'll soon go from the stage of knowing no other planets like Earth to knowing hundreds of them, and people want to look for life," he says. "The problem is it is very difficult and time-consuming to search, so you'll only be able to look at one or two and you need to have some way of saying which are the best and worst prospects. I don't think it will be a clear cut 'this will be habitable, this won't be habitable', I think it will be 'this is a bit more habitable, this is a bit less habitable' and impacts are certainly one of the important factors."

From alien life to human life, impacts have a large influence. In the knowledge that Jupiter is far from being our savior and that the asteroid that finished off the dinosaurs may not merely have been one that slipped through the net, programs such as NASA's Spaceguard survey that seek out potentially hazardous objects are all the more vital. We must thank impacts for bringing water to Earth and paving the way for humans to evolve, but we must also never, ever stop watching the skies.

Information On Blood Tests Intended For STD | Mellenwi.org

Folks who are sexually active can be at risk for sexually transmitted diseases, or STDs. Sexually transmitted diseases may display slight or without having any sign and symptom, but can certainly critically have an impact on ones health and fitness. Therefore, regular STD examination is essential for the health of individuals that have multiple sex partners .

You will discover quite a few distinct tactics to check for sexually transmitted illnesses. Quite a few STD testing require some sort of blood test. A few STDs that need a blood test for diagnosis include syphilis, Aids, hepatitis plus the herpes virus. Std testing for various other infections, for instance gonorrhea, chlamydia, along with Warts, is performed by way of a urine analyze or genital tissue sample.

A blood test for STD screening is done at a health center. A physician gets a blood sample from the individual, and sends it to the lab to be assessed. For the herpes virus diagnosis, a blood check may not be definitive; more screening could be needed. When a sufferer?s blood check returns positive for a STD, the person really should adhere to the medical professional?s advice for treatment and also inform his / her sexual companions.

FEC: John Edwards campaign owes U.S. $2.1 million

Davis Turner / Reuters, file

Former U.S. senator and presidential candidate John Edwards makes a statement outside the U.S. District Court after pleading not guilty to six federal criminal felony charges in Winston-Salem, North Carolina in June 2011.

By msnbc.com staff

John Edwards? defunct presidential campaign must repay the U.S. Treasury $2.1 million within 30 days, the Federal Election Commission said in a report released Friday.

The report says that in his pursuit of the 2008 campaign Democratic nomination, Edwards received a total of $ 12,882,878 in matching funds from the United States Treasury -- $2,136,507 more than his entitlement.

The commission rejected arguments made by Edwards? lawyers who said that problems with the commission led to an incorrect finding on the amount of the entitlement.

"After careful consideration, the commission determines that none of these arguments has merit," the commissioners wrote in the document.

Lawyers for Edwards' campaign committee said they won't contest the commission's decision, according to a report on Philly.com.

"While the committee disagrees with the commission's determination, it will not pursue this matter further," said Patricia Fiori, one of the lawyers representing Edwards, according to the news site.

Edwards political career took a nosedive after 2008 revelations of an extramarital affair with Rielle Hunter, a campaign videographer who later gave birth to his child.

The FEC case is separate from a pending criminal trial, in which Edwards pleaded not guilty to charges of violating campaign-finance laws in a bid to cover up that affair.
