MULTIYEAR HIGHS: The number of Britons unemployed is at the highest level in 17 years, with women and young people feeling the worst effects, according to government statistics.
RISING UNEMPLOYMENT: 2.64 million people were unemployed in the U.K. at the end of October. That's the highest number since 1994. Britain's unemployment rate is now 8.3 percent, up 0.4 percent on the quarter and the highest level since 1996.
TAKING A TOLL: Austerity measures, prolonged economic weakness and a eurozone crisis are all to blame.
