American Airlines boarding experiment rewards fliers without carry-ons

If you fly coach, you know the carry-on madness can turn civilized travelers into crazed overhead bin squatters in the quest to avoid checked bag fees, so one carrier is trying a different approach.

American Airlines is testing a new boarding procedure that awards passengers who don?t bring any carry-ons by allowing them to board right after its most elite fliers and ahead of others in economy class.

?We are continually looking at ways to provide customers with a better, more convenient travel experience that keeps them at ease throughout their journey with us,? said American Airlines spokeswoman Andrea Huguely, in a statement to NBC News.

?It?s important to note this is a limited test. Should we decide to modify our regular boarding process, we will be informing our people and our customers first.?

The experiment, which began several weeks ago, is taking place at four airports: Austin-Bergstrom International, Washington Dulles International, Baltimore Washington International and Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International.

Huguely declined to say what kind of feedback the airline has received from passengers so far, noting only that ?data is still being analyzed.?

One flier who experienced the new procedure at Austin?s airport on Thursday gave it a big thumbs-up.

?Best boarding experience ever,? tweeted Lisa Carlucci Thomas, in an exchange with Airfarewatchdog.com.

In 2008, American became the first U.S. airline to charge a fee for the first checked bag. Other carriers soon followed, with the extra charges becoming a revenue bonanza for the industry.

U.S. airlines took in more than $2.6 billion in bag fees in the first three quarters of 2012, according to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics.

But at the same time, delays caused by passengers scrambling to find space for their carry-ons during the boarding process have been costly for carriers, said George Hobica, founder of Airfarewatchdog.com.

?A plane sitting on the ground ? not only is it not earning money but at some airports airlines pay for gate time by the minute so the longer you?re on the ground, the more you actually pay to the airport,? Hobica said.

?(Checked bag fees) may have had unintended consequences... this is perhaps why Southwest for all these years has given you two free checked bags.?

Many planes are not equipped to handle all the luggage passengers bring on board, Hobica added, and some airlines have even had to spend money to install larger overhead bins to accommodate travelers who are trying to avoid checked bag fees.

Then, there?s the psychological toll, with the struggle for overhead bins leading to altercations between passengers and a tense atmosphere on flights, Hobica pointed out.

Will early boarding be enough of an incentive for fliers to ditch their carry-ons? The jury is still out, Hobica said, reminding travelers that this is just an experiment.

Afghan local police member kills 5 colleagues

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ? A member of Afghanistan's government-backed militia program has shot and killed five of his colleagues, an official said Friday.

The shooting happened Thursday morning in a remote part of Badghis province's Qadis district, said provincial government spokesman Mirwais Mirzakwal. He said he did not have further details because the region is difficult to reach over the telephone but that investigators have been sent to the site of the shooting.

The attacker was a member of the Afghan Local Police, a program in which the government in Kabul and international allies train and fund villagers to mount defense forces against insurgents.

It was the latest in a string of insider attacks by members of the Afghan security forces against colleagues or international advisers.

Such attacks threaten the strength of the Afghan forces just as they are working to take over responsibility from international troops. Afghan forces are scheduled to take over security responsibility for the entire country sometime next year.

Voyager Solar System 'exit' debated

The possibility that the Voyager-1 spacecraft may have left the Solar System is being hotly debated.

Launched in September 1977, the probe was sent initially to study the outer planets, but then just kept on going.

Researchers studying its data say the craft appears now to be in a realm of space beyond the influence of our Sun.

But the US space agency (Nasa), which manages Voyager, says that it regards the probe as still being inside the Solar System.

The mission is currently moving more than 18 billion km from Earth, or 123 times the distance between our planet and the Sun.

No human artefact has ever reached so deep into the cosmos.

A measure of the distance travelled is that it takes a staggering 16 hours for Voyager 1's radio messages to arrive on Earth.

Standing in Nasa's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California two years ago, I watched as data from the lonely craft flickered across giant screens.

The scientist behind the mission, Ed Stone, talked in adoring terms of the 70s technology that has survived decades of hurtling through space to become mankind's most distant emissary.

Nasa has speculated for years about the actual moment of crossing from our Solar System into the void; and now this may finally have happened.

The next time the craft will come even remotely close to another star? About 40,000 years.

The latest research is published online in the journal Geophysical Research Letters (GRL).

It concerns data the spacecraft has been gathering about changes in its environment which for some time now have suggested it is about to cross over the Solar System's border - the so-called heliopause.

Cosmic ray detection

It has been detecting a rise in the number of high-energy particles, or cosmic rays, coming towards it from interstellar space, while at the same time recording a decline in the intensity of energetic particles coming from behind, from our Sun.

A big change occurred on 25 August last year, which the GRL paper's authors say was like a "heliocliff".

"Within just a few days, the heliospheric intensity of trapped radiation decreased, and the cosmic ray intensity went up as you would expect if it exited the heliosphere," explained Prof Bill Webber from New Mexico State University in Las Cruces.

Nasa funded the study but said any assessment that Voyager might be in interstellar space did not reflect the view of everyone working on the project, and Prof Weber acknowledges there is an on-going debate about the probe's status.

Many researchers would like a long period with the data all pointing in one direction before calling the exit definitive.

"It's outside the normal heliosphere, I would say that," Prof Webber said in a release from the American Geophysical Union, publishers of GRL.

"We're in a new region. And everything we're measuring is different and exciting."

The Voyager project scientist at Nasa's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Ed Stone, said he wanted to see a reorientation of the magnetic fields around the probe before declaring it to be in interstellar space. This was a "critical marker", he added. "?that change of direction has not yet been observed."

Voyager-1 was launched on 5 September 1977, and its sister spacecraft, Voyager-2, on 20 August 1977.

The probes' initial goal was to survey the outer planets Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune - a task they completed in 1989.

They were then despatched towards deep space, in the general direction of the centre of our Milky Way Galaxy.

Their plutonium power sources will stop generating electricity in about 10-15 years, at which point their instruments and transmitters will die.

Voyager-1 is on course to approach a star called AC +793888, but it will only get to within two light-years of it and it will be tens of thousands of years before it does so.

Brain tumor cells killed by anti-nausea drug

Mar. 19, 2013 ? New research from the University of Adelaide has shown for the first time that the growth of brain tumors can be halted by a drug currently being used to help patients recover from the side effects of chemotherapy.

The discovery has been made during a study looking at the relationship between brain tumors and a peptide associated with inflammation in the brain, called "substance P."

Substance P is commonly released throughout the body by the nervous system, and contributes to tissue swelling following injury. In the brain, levels of substance P greatly increase after traumatic brain injury and stroke.

"Researchers have known for some time that levels of substance P are also greatly increased in different tumor types around the body," says Dr Elizabeth Harford-Wright, a postdoctoral fellow in the University's Adelaide Centre for Neuroscience Research.

"We wanted to know if these elevated levels of the peptide were also present in brain tumor cells, and if so, whether or not they were affecting tumor growth. Importantly, we wanted to see if we could stop tumor growth by blocking substance P."

In laboratory studies for her PhD, Dr Harford-Wright found that levels of substance P were greatly increased in brain tumor tissue.

Knowing that substance P binds to a receptor called NK1, Dr Harford-Wright used an antagonist drug called Emend? to stop substance P binding to the receptor. Emend? is already used in cancer clinics to help patients with chemotherapy-induced nausea.

The results were startling.

"We were successful in blocking substance P from binding to the NK1 receptor, which resulted in a reduction in brain tumor growth -- and it also caused cell death in the tumor cells," Dr Harford-Wright says.

"So preventing the actions of substance P from carrying out its role in brain tumors actually halted the growth of brain cancer.

"This is a very exciting result, and it offers further opportunities to study possible brain tumor treatments over the coming years."

This research has been funded by the NeuroSurgical Research Foundation (NRF), which is celebrating 50 years of supporting neurosurgical research in Australia and at the University of Adelaide.
